"little babies no longer are supposed to take orange juice...?????? at what age are they to take it now???"

Now I think the age is at least a year... The AAP recommends that solids not be started until at least 6 months old, no citrus until after a year (which includes strawberries), no nuts 'til after 2yrs old... and there are a few other things too, which I can't remember right off hand.

The reason these things shouldn't be introduced earlier is to lessen the chance of a food allergy/sensisitivity starting. It seems like today so many kids are allergic/sensitive to So many things... I think there are several reasons for that, some of which we can't discuss on this list ;-)

IMO, it just makes sense to wait on a lot of that stuff Anyway, because small babies should be getting the food they were meant to have~ breastmilk ;-)

I remember reading no acidic juices like orange/grapefruit/lemon until either 6 or 8 months old.

Re: Herbal Remedies - Re: juices///Cavity in toddler

When my eldest was a baby, it was proper to give orange juice as well as water when jusg a few months old. so i gave it to him. his little hiney broke out like it was pounded with a meat tenderizer. i stopped the orange juice and it healed pretty quickly. i gave him tiny little ascorbic acid pills and it worked quite well. His grany didn't think the OJ would hurt so she gave him some and he broke out again..badly..... my grandchildren tell me that little babies no longer are supposed to take orange juice...?????? at what age are they to take it now???

"2 juices a month!?! What does she drink?

Brock has 4 sippys of juice a DAY."

4 sippy cups of juice a Day?!?! oh my gosh... My nearly 2 year old is still nursing, but the ONLY other thing she drinks is Water.

My older kids only get a small cup of juice with lunch & dinner, and drink water all day long. The only milk any of them have is a little on their cereal/oatmeal in the morning for breakfast.

Dear Jan,

I was reading a book called "Sugar Blues" and it really describes what effect sugar has on our bodies as well as foods like white rice and white bread. Formulas bought at the stores are also mediocre. So it may also have a lot to do with what you ARE feeding to your kid that gives them further allergies.

Just thought I'd throw that in.

Kelli~

Yes, it's really common for nursing moms to have to cut out certain foods or the baby will have major gas problems, rashes, or other symptoms of food sensitivities/allergies.

The most common offenders are milk/dairy, citrus, green veggies (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and califlower even though it's not green ;-), chocolate, pop, sometimes certain varieties of nuts... La Leche League and a couple of other sites I know of have good lists of foods to possibly avoid if your baby is having problems. Most books on breastfeeding also have these lists.

And then there are food dyes that can cause some babies a Lot of problems... Yellow food dyes that the mom eats tend to cause sleeping problems in large numbers of nursing babies, for example.

I had to stop drinking milk with each of my nursing babies. I finally just quit completely several years ago. I realized I felt a lot better when not drinking it ;-) My newborns couldn't tolerate me eating green veggies, tomato based pasta sauces, and some were very sensitive to me eating chocolate. It took some experimentation, but it was worth it. And, if I cut out something that bothered them as newborns, by the time they were a few months old I could eat it again without them having problems. If I went ahead and ate something that bothered them anyway, they ended up being sensitive to it Far longer...

Which brings me to Zeb's point~

I agree, what people Do feed their babies and then small children makes a big difference. Formula is worse than mediocre and causes a lot of problems for many babies. It has corn syrup among other things in it. Besides the fact that formula is made from dairy wastes (eww), the proteins in formula are way too big for human babies to process properly, which can cause fissures in the baby's gut vs. breastmilk which literally 'seals' any immature spots in the gut and heals it.

I could go on forever on the benefits of breastmilk, but I'll stop since that's not what this list is about! lol
