Guest guest
Hello; I am hoping that someone can suggest a possible solution. I have a daughter in her late 20's...college educated (grad in 4 years)...who has since gone very down hill...has had 3 back surguries to repair herniated discs received from a basketable injury in high school...these were spread out over several years. After these surguries and all the pain medication that has been prescribed for her...she is NOT herself...she has lost her job recently due to missing too much work... She goes through periods of being awake for days...then crashing and sleeping for 2 days...in the meantimes she has picked at her face...causing scaring etc...he legs swell around the ankles and her face swells up...I know she is on Methadone right now...(was on Oxycotin)... She is just so not herself...her husband and family just don't know what to do... This beautiful young girl has just turned into someone we don't know... She is being treated by an internal med doc...who doesn't seem to see a big picture or recommend that she see a sleep clinic or get off of methadone etc.... Please If anyone has any ideas on how we can help her, I would be so appreciativce.... Again this is someone who played hs basketball...was really on the ball...had lots of friends, had a very active life to someone who doesn't come to family events like Thanksgiving, Mother's day etc. Thank you so much. Guest guest
Kathy, I agree with another poster here ... this sounds like a BAD reaction to the drugs they have her on. I looked up Mehtadone and it is loaded with side effects. Note below the definition of one of the skin problems associated with Methadone called *Pruritis*. I would get her off any and all drugs as soon as is medically possible. The pain will probably be better than what the drugs are doing to her. Most doctors try to cover the side effects of one prescription medicine with another prescription med ... I would not take any other meds while getting off this stuff as soon as I could. Of course that's only my personal opinion. Love, Cook ........ I got the following from this web site for a particulr brand of Methadone, but if one can do it all can. http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/methdone_ad.htm " .....The major hazards of methadone are respiratory depression and, to a lesser degree, systemic hypotension. Respiratory arrest, shock, cardiac arrest, and death have occurred. The most frequently observed adverse reactions include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, and sweating. These effects seem to be more prominent in ambulatory patients and in those who are not suffering severe pain. In such individuals, lower doses are advisable. Other adverse reactions include the following: Body as a Whole - asthenia (weakness), edema, headache Cardiovascular - arrhythmias, bigeminal rhythms, bradycardia, cardiomyopathy, ECG abnormalities, extrasystoles, flushing, heart failure, hypotension, palpitations, phlebitis, QT interval prolongation, syncope, T-wave inversion, tachycardia, torsade de pointes, ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia Digestive - abdominal pain, anorexia, biliary tract spasm, constipation, dry mouth, glossitis Hematologic and Lymphatic - reversible thrombocytopenia has been described in opioid addicts with chronic hepatitis Metabolic and Nutritional - hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, weight gain Nervous - agitation, confusion, disorientation, dysphoria, euphoria, insomnia, seizures Respiratory - pulmonary edema, respiratory depression Skin and Appendages - pruritis, urticaria, other skin rashes, and rarely, hemorrhagic urticaria Special Senses - hallucinations, visual disturbances Urogenital - amenorrhea, antidiuretic effect, reduced libido and/or potency, urinary retention or hesitancy Maintenance on a Stabilized Dose - During prolonged administration of methadone, as in a methadone maintenance treatment program, there is usually a gradual, yet progressive, disappearance of side effects over a period of several weeks. However, constipation and sweating often persist. " This I got from here: http://tinyurl.com/2ockxp Pruritis: " .....Pruritus (itch) is a common symptom encountered by dermatologists and primary physicians. It is defined as an unpleasant sensation that provokes a desire to scratch. Scratching can be considered physiologically appropriate only when it helps to remove the noxious stimulus from the skin, such as in parasitosis. In most other circumstances, it causes a great deal of discomfort and distress to the person. Although itching is often seen as a minor social disability, it can be so severe and intractable as to completely incapacitate a person and present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the physician.
