Guest guest
I was just wondering if there is any essential oils that work effectively for keeping sandflies and mosquitos away. Last weekend I went to a family party and the next day my legs were covered in extremely itchy bites (my guess is sandflies, since I didnt notice them at the time and the amount of time they took to become itchy, and we were near the water) I have been using patchouli to reduce the itching which is working relatively well (better than tea tree oil) but I have another family party at the same place this weekend and would like to go prepared. I am after something hopefully fairly simple and also pleasant smelling. I am in Australia, if that helps any.
Guest guest
Citronella is a good repellant. I use medical grade essential oils. Guest guest
they use citronella to repell insects in burners so if you added some to olive oil and rub it into your legs it may help and smells nice too----- a friend of mine uses dettol-in oil , diluted in spray bottle and rubs it on and swears by it but i think the citronella seems nicer cbr600ness <cbr600ness wrote: I was just wondering if there is any essential oils that work effectively for keeping sandflies and mosquitos away. Guest guest
Someone from this group sent me this link some recently, which I appreciated very much. I haven't bought the bands as it is now cold and so I don't see mosquitoes around. But I intend to purchase them as soon as I need them. http://carolinagreen.com/ecomm/proddetail.asp?prod=1WristBandsAss ortedColors Hope this helps. Guest guest
Pennyroyal oil is very effective. Many insects hate it including ants, mosquitos and fleas. It is very strong and has a very, very strong mint smell. It needs to be diluted in either alcohol or a solvent that will disolve oil. I spray it where there is a problem. You can spray it on clothes, put some of a fabric collar for pets, or put the oil directly on swatches of cloth or another absorbent material. It is pricey so I suggest buying somewhere you can get it in bulk and split the costs with friend. I bought a pint of it which was a fraction of the cost if I bought several bottles and it will last me for years. Do not use if pregnant or you have pregnant pets or other animals as in the old days it was used to induce abortions but that required a much larger quantity than anyone would practically use it for. You can also grow it as it is a low growing mint that will spread and reseed itself in sunny hot areas.
