Guest guest
Hi Angela - Over the years I have found that the most helpful natural remedy for sinus infections and headcolds for me and most everyone I have suggested it to is Grapefruit Seed Extract. You can purchase it at most health food stores. I usually take 30 drops (the liquid kind I find absorbs faster into the system) into a spoon full of orange juice (to mask how bitter the GSE is) two to three times per day. The vitamins in the orange juice are also very helpful in fighting off any sort of infection. Garlic oil tabelts are also great infection fighters and a nice alternative to having to eat garlic. Of course I am not a doctor, but have found this natural remedy to be helpful every time. Best wishes, Barb Marynowski http://www.barbaramarynowski.blogspot.com http://www.sokejoe.blogspot.com , Angela England <ang.england wrote: > > I have a friend who is pregnant and battling a head cold/sinus infection...the kind with the thick and colorful mucus. Guest guest
During pregnancy the body seems to get twice as mucasy as it would be in the same situation non pregnant. My allergies have been terrible since I've been pregnant. I have found relief from the extra mucas by running a humidifier in my room and using a saline nasal spray before bed. If your friend has any more problems with dryness after loosening up the mucas with the saline, she can rub a bit of olive oil inside her nostrils. Good luck! , Angela England <ang.england wrote: > > I have a friend who is pregnant and battling a head cold/sinus infection...the kind with the thick and colorful mucus. Guest guest
Barb - did you know that the Grapefruit Seed Extract also comes in capsule form? The powder has absolutely no taste at all. I discovered this when using for cat rescue problems and would pull apart a capsule and mix in their food whereas if I used the drops, it had to be exactly a certain number of drops - not one single more or they wouldn't take one bite of the food. Guest guest
SINUS SURVIVAL THROUGH WHOLE FOODS AND WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS We have become a nation of " drippy noses " and " stuffy heads " , with rising statistics on sinus, asthma, and allergies. Dr. Ivker, a family practice physical, says chronic sinusitis is now America's most common " incurable " chronic ailment. What is causing this epidemic of sinus disease? In his book " Sinus Survival " , Dr. Ivker believes the cause is a combination of air pollution and overuse of antibiotics, causing weakened immune systems and yeast overgrowth. Many other factors can also tip the balance in favor of yeast proliferation in the gut and the upper part of the respiratory tract including birth control pills, other drugs, sugar, alcohol, and environmental chemicals. Most people can't avoid everyday pollutants altogether, but they can take steps to protect their health using a healing diet, eating whole foods and whole food supplements. Eat primarily nutrient-dense whole foods, which contain live enzymes. Foods that lack these enzymes cause the body to become acid, product mucus, and congest the intestinal tract. Over time, if you keep eating a poor diet, this congestion builds up, layer after layer, eventually forming a hardened layer of plaque in the intestine, which is believed to contribute towards a majority of the obstacles to optimal health. Following are some natural health tips for the relief of sinus related problems. This is a natural health approach which addresses the whole body. • Total elimination of milk and milk products for at least three months. Because milk increases congestion and allergic reactions in many people, making this change may help reduce sinusitis. • It is important to get a good air filtration system for your home, because many allergens and nasal irritants are airborne. • Practice daily nasal douching, which means inhaling a warm saline solution to help flush out your sinuses. Use ¼ teaspoon of sea salt to a cup of warm water. Close one nostril and inhale the solution through the other from a cup or your hand. If you find this too difficult, you also can use a rubber bulb syringe or one of the nasal douching appliances (a neti pot, for example, available from a health food store). • Applying a hot, wet compress to your upper face whenever you feel congested will also help your sinuses drain. Work up to as much heat as you can stand and keep it on for 10 minutes at a time, at least once a day. • Try a diet consisting mostly of 50% raw foods (start by steaming lightly or juicing, especially if you are not used to eating raw foods). Avoid foods that cause excess mucus in the gastrointestinal tracts, lungs, sinuses, and nasal cavity. Foods that lead to the formation of mucus are meats, eggs, processed foods, tobacco, junk foods, and white flour products (pasta, white rice and white breads). • Do not eat a typical American breakfast. Instead, have fresh fruits for breakfast and sip hot liquids to help clear the mucus. I like a specific drink made from hot water, some fresh lemon or lime, and molasses or organic raw honey. Do not use boiling water, just hot enough to drink but not hot enough to deactivate the enzymes in the honey and lemon. It's a warm sweet and sour drink and an excellent way to start the day. • Make sure you are taking plant-based enzymes - http://tinyurl.com/mkwo - with meals to digest your meals thoroughly, and to help your body absorb the nutrients. Also use your enzymes between meals on an empty stomach, specifically at bedtime. Enzymes taken between meals can provide support for the body's natural " housekeeping " phase of digestion, and can reduce inflammation by digesting the molecules that promote inflammation. Enzymes enhance the digestion of food and the delivery of nutrients to the blood even if your own digestive system is faulty. Because all cooked and processed foods lack enzymes, it is important to supplement with enzymes to help you digest and utilize your food. These enzymes help to break down all types of foods including fats, carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. Enzymes need nutrient co-factors in order to function properly, so these enzymes are micro-blended with a mineral-rich whole food which supplies those needed co-factors. • Make sure you are taking acidophilus and bifidus so you can ensure proper levels of good bacteria in the intestine: Acidophilus - http://tinyurl.com/24ajq - supports the health of the small intestine by creating a favorable environment for the growth of beneficial bacteria which allows the normal movement of food through the intestine. Acidophilus helps to keep the side of the small intestinal wall clean and produces natural B vitamins in the bowel. This acidophilus is unique because it is microblended with a whole food which makes the good bacteria strong and able to multiply quickly…thus, enhancing the immune system. Bifidus - http://tinyurl.com/26rur - helps repopulate the large intestine with friendly bacteria, creates a favorable environment for the growth of good bacteria that keeps the large intestine healthy, and promotes regular bowel movements to help eliminate toxins from the system. This bifidus is unique because it is microblended with a whole food, which makes the good bacteria able to multiply quickly…thus, supporting the health of the digestive system. • Chlorophyll is very important. Since its molecular structure is very similar to hemoglobin in human blood, chlorophyll in green foods can help strengthen the immune system, support healthy blood and circulation as well as help to maintain proper operation of the intestinal tract. A food that is high in the chlorophyll content is wild-crafted blue green algae. It has one of the highest chlorophyll contents of any green food (Simply the Best article): Blue Green Algae (Alpha Sun Algae) - http://tinyurl.com/g1iz - is a nutrient-rich, naturally energizing whole food supplement that provides physical well-being by supplying the body with much needed micronutrients and trace minerals that tend to be missing from today's diet. Blue green algae provides essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids, in a " naturally occurring " and easily usable form, not isolated or synthetic. Blue Green Algae with Cell Wall Removed (Omega Sun Algae) – http://tinyurl.com/iw4k - Because the cell wall is removed, this nutrient-rich whole food supplement is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier to feed and enhance the activity of the brain (the most nutrient-demanding organ in the body). Blue green algae with the cell wall removed has a positive impact on mood, attention, concentration, and the nervous system in general. • Black cumin seeds are very well known in folk remedies in the Middle East. Traditionally, black cumin seeds have been used for nutritional support for the upper part of the respiratory tract. Generally, the seeds are added to food or ground and mixed with raw honey. The primary active components of black cumin seeds are certain oils that reduce the release of histamine. Histamine often causes allergic reactions and is associated with respiratory conditions such as bronchial asthma (Nutrition Science News, Jan. 2001, p.28). You can purchase black cumin seeds from Middle Eastern or Indian grocery stores. • CoEnzyme Q10 - http://tinyurl.com/f1f7 - is a very powerful antioxidant that can be a good nutritional support for the lungs and the upper part of the respiratory tract. It is a valuable immune system stimulant and can increase cellular oxygenation. Because it is a fat soluble vitamin, a good formula will have the CoEnzyme Q10 microblended with organic flax seed oil and blue green algae, as both of these foods are high in essential fatty acids. • Avoid air pollution. Change jobs if necessary, and if possible, because your present environment may be dirty, dusty, and toxic to inhale. Do not use aerosol products. • Rest and avoid stress. Get plenty of fresh air. • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of pure (not tap) water daily. Don't drink with meals, just between meals (small sips). • Drinking fruit or veggie smoothies is very helpful because they provide raw ingredients with lots of nutrients. Use carrot, parsley, celery, and different green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach. Also, use brightly colored fruits such as blueberries, cherries, mangoes, etc. My favorite machine for making smoothies is the Vita Mix, because the resulting drink includes the very valuable fiber. It's an easy and enjoyable way to get your daily servings of fruits and veggies, with no messy clean-up. You can get free ground shipping worth $25.00 if you use this code: 06-001715. • Take a clove or two of fresh garlic when you go to sleep at night. Cut it in small pieces and swallow it with a glass of water. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and helps prevent infection. Garlic is a strong medicinal food. Therefore, make sure you don't take raw garlic more than 3 weeks in a row. • A fast on cayenne powder mixed with fresh lemon juice and organic maple syrup should help with clearing inflammation and help break up the mucus. Drink 8 to 12 glasses throughout the day. Continue this fast for up to 20 days. I'm told by people who have done this fast that emphysema, asthma and sinusitis symptoms clear up. Guest guest
I had this problem in all 3 of my pregnancies. I stopped drinking milk and eatting cheese after I read it caused alot of mucous and I could tell the difference. All the dr says is drink lots of milk and take your prenatel. Guest guest
Has anyone mentioned a Neti pot yet? It is a way to snort salt water into your sinuses. It sounds yucky but it works for many people. Google it. Ien in the Kootenays http://freegreenliving.com (blog)

Guest guest
Great post. I would add a few small things. 1) Vegetable juices and juice fasting are good to clean the body of toxins and break up the mucus. I have used it for many chronic diseases for 30+ years. Start with carrot and add celery and beet. Also add a small amount of ginger root as it is a great blood purifier. Then add green pepper, parsley, cucumber and apple for taste and enzymes. If you want the exact formulae, send me an e-mail request for it. The Vita-Mix is a great machine and will last forever. If you can not afford one new, check out e-bay. 2) You mentioned several forms of blue-green algae for chlorophyll. I would also suggest that people try the liquid chlorophyll from wachters.com made from sea vegetation. It is very good stuff. 3) Cayenne powders are very different. Check out the heat units. See Curing with Cayenne by Sam Biser and Dr. Richard Schulze. It is also on video. Try: http://www.herbdoc.com For some of the best and hottest if you are not going to grow your own.
