Greetings: I have a question that I am going to post and anyone who has

helpful information about this question please let me know. I have an

eight year old grandson who has a problem with going to the restroom to

urinate or move his bowels. He has to wear a pullup all the time even

when he goes to bed or goes to school. I don't know how to handle this

situation. Almost everything has been done to try and find the root or

cause of his situation. I keep thinking that he will eventually grow out

of it but he is already in 3rd grade and he does not seem to be making

any progress. Thanks for any info or help that you can offer or suggest

a remedy for his concern. Thanks again. AL. [:-/]

I saw a program on tv about two boys who had trouble holding their bowels, and

this continued throughout their lifetime. Apparently, they were born with a

limited sense of having to go. Do he have accidents or he just has to go all the

time? Is he worried that he might get in trouble for soiling? Could it be

psychological? There are many questions here. Perhaps if you ignored the

behavior and never spoke of it, it would eventually pass?

Is he a nervous type? If so, patience and understanding would go a

long way.

what about checking his thyroid? The thyroid out of sync can cause more frequent

bowel movements, urniation, etc. .... did he have his thyroid check? very

important especially at his age to maintain proper growth,

When my oldest son was 3, he would not toilet train.

He just would not.. we had him in a therapy group and

the psychologist that worked with the kids told us

that he wouldn't, because it was the only thing in his

life he could control. My marriage was a bad one and

there was so much stress and abuse going on at the

time, when I divorced his father 2 years later, he

trained immediately.

Your grandson could be dealing with a lot of stress

and anxiety.

The question was:

I have an

eight year old grandson who has a problem with going to the restroom to

urinate or move his bowels. He has to wear a pullup all the time even

when he goes to bed or goes to school>

Does he have a physical problem going, period, or

does he have a problem using a toilet, for whatever

reason? That wasn't clear.

If it is the latter, does he have other developmental

problems?

Thanks for responding and no he has no other physical

problems and its like I said, we have tried virtually

everything to make him go to the restroom when he

needs to go. He has had therapy and psychological

sessions but we have not been able to find the proper

patricians who can address this issue. Sorry that I

was not clear on my question/concern. Thanks again.

When my youngest son was 5yo, we discovered that he had an intestinal blockage.

He was unable to pass this and small amounts of fecal material would escape

throughout the day for years. He seemed to rarely have a normal bowel movement

and we thought it was control issue for him...this was not the case though...it

actually *was* a physical malady .

Once he was treated, the blockage passed and he had no more " accidents " . In

retrospect, alleviating the problem was really quite simple...once the diagnosis

was made. He was treated at the GI clinic of the local Children's Hospital with

a nightly regimen of mineral oil/juice cocktails and some use of

laxatives/enemas. Can't remember exactly but we had a schedule for several weeks

of treatment and at the end, the probem was gone never again to return.

When he is at home, he should be bare from the waist down. When he

has to urinate or move his bowels, he will not want it to dribble down

his legs or make a mess on the floor, so theoretically he should go to

the potty. If he does it on the floor, he should be made to clean it

up. This is a good way to potty train a 2 or 3 yr. old, may work for

an 8 yr. old. You may need to have a professional carpet cleaner come

in when he's potty trained, but that would be worth it, if it works.

With a 2 or 3 yr. old it usually takes a couple weeks, but with him

probably longer since he has to be covered up at school.

Before you start this, explain what is going to happen and tell him

" the doctor said that this is what we need to do " - put the blame on

somebody else who is making him do this, not the mother.

Thanks so much for responding and I don't think that

he has a problem with going too much but he does

continue to get wet and and once he starts to smell my

daughter knows he needs to be changed. Its been a

challenge in progress but its extremely slow. Thank

you for suggestion, I will certainly consider it next

time he visits a physician. AL.
