Spirit Powers in Native American Medicine

Kenneth Cohen

We live in a polyarchy – the real power is everywhere, in us and

around us. The manitou – powers – are more than stone spirits,

plant spirits, animal spirits. They are lights reflected from the Great

Spirit, Kitche Manitou. From the Native viewpoint, a good person is in

harmony with these powers but does not contact them out of curiosity,

collect them, use them in the service of ego, or brag about them. Ken

will share his understanding of the Manitou, including their role in

creating or curing disease. He will also explore the relationship

between traditional Native American values (respect, generosity,

courage, etc.) and a life of genuine " power " and presence. The

teachings will be interspersed with songs and healing practices. You

are also welcome to bring your questions for discussion or commentary.

At the end of the talk, Ken will sign copies of his book Honoring the

Medicine: The Essential Guide to Native American Healing, first place

winner, Best Health and Wellness Book in the U.S. (Books for a Better

Life and the National MS Foundation).

Ken " Bear Hawk " Cohen is a traditional healer trained by Native

American, African, and other indigenous medicine people for more than

thirty years. Of Russian Jewish ancestry, his work is strongly

endorsed by his adoptive Cree Indian family (Sturgeon Lake First

Nation) and elders of many nations. Ken was one of nine

" exceptional healers " studied by the Menninger Institute and is

considered a world leader in the dialogue between ancient wisdom and

modern science. He is the winner of the leading international award in

energy medicine, the Alyce and Elmer Green Award for innovation and

Lifetime Achievement. Ken is the author of Honoring the Medicine: The

Essential Guide to Native American Healing (Ballantine Books) and more

than 200 journal articles on spirituality and health.
