Guest guest
Could you please give me your opinion of what will work for my kitty? Bernie has an obsessive compulsive need to groom himself. It comes in phases. He is in one right now. He licks himself raw and chews on his fur. It is really bad. Last time he had it, I gave him some Bach Remedies but they don't seem to be working this time. Thanks. Guest guest
I have a bird that has an obsessive compulsive need to over groom. I've been using a product called " Illumination " from the Amazon Herb Company. It has helped a lot, but I would not call it a " cure " at this point. It's a powder. I have mixed it into soft food for the cats and dogs. Guest guest
Cats instinctively will clean themselves. However if he is always biting, he might have fleas or allergies. I would ask your vet. Guest guest
Are you sure he doesn't have mites, or fleas, or a liver problem? All these can cause itchiness. I would get a blood check for the liver numbers and to make sure everything else is fine. If it is, and you know for a fact that there are no fleas, I would think about mites. You can sprinkle borax into the fur (20 Mule Team borax laundry soap is pure borax) and it won't hurt if the cat licks it off, so long as you don't over do it. The borax can kill the mites in just one or two applications. Also--does the cat go outside? Perhaps there is something out there that he is allergic to. And where exactly is he chewing the fur? His back, but, back feet, tail? Could he be allergic to something he's sleeping on, meaning the soap you wash his bedding in? Have you switched foods? Guest guest
Your cat could also be dealing with stress and or nervousness. Pets will do that when the home environment has subtle or large changes. Jenny Kernan --- miracleyorkies wrote: > Cats instinctively will clean themselves. Guest guest
You stated it correctly. Over grooming in cats is usually due to obsessive compulsive behavior. Our domesticated pets are susceptible to behavior problems just as humans are. I had one cat that over groomed the inside of his hind legs when I introduced a new cat to the household. Once he accepted the new cat the over grooming stopped. Your cat is displacing energy which happens in the natural world as well. If the energy cannot be expressed in the way it would normally then it has to go some where. It is a particular problem with indoor cats. I would brush him several times a day, try and give him as much play time as possible, and check with a holistic vet. He either needs to have the energy go somewhere or subdue it and there may be some natural remedies out there that work for cats. My cats love Valerian root and almost act like it is catnip but don't go as crazy with it. I am not sure if it has the same calming effect on cats but it is worth a try. , " Dr. Maria Moratto " <drmoratto wrote: > > Could you please give me your opinion of what will work for my > kitty? > Bernie has an obsessive compulsive need to groom himself. Guest guest
Have you tried one of those broom straw toys? The birds seem to love those and it does really help cut down on over grooming. Guest guest
I'm assuming you've ruled out the usual, first, Maria? Things like fleas, mites, a food or environmental allergy? If you have him on dry food, you might want to switch. The grains in most drys can be the culprit. If you feel it's truly an obsessive/compulsive sort of thing, try looking at some combo flower essences. Only Natural Pet has a nice selection. I used one of theirs for my dog, who was constantly chewing a spot open on his front legs. I'd watch him, keep him away from it and treat it with healing salve. I'd barely get it healed when he'd start again. I gave him their skin irritation combo, and that was it! He stopped chewing, the areas healed perfectly, and he's never chewed again. One bottle and a cure - can't ask for much more than that! Also try to sidetrack your kitty when he starts over grooming. Get out a fun toy or something. I did that for a while with a kitty I had that overgroomed his belly. Weird thing is that it resolved after my daughter moved out. And she adored this cat, and he adored her! If he was stressed by her, I could see it, but there didn't seem to be anything. But, who knows - maybe he was picking up her teenage angst back then! Guest guest
Thanks! I have bought the remedy for skin irritation. Of course, this is a stray cat that found his way to my home. He is declawed and my cats hate him. One of them picks up a fight at every sight. To this other cat, I am also giving Bach Remedies for tolerance, etc. Bernie goes through phases. Some phases are good and some are not, as now. His skin is the worst, and it smells too! I will put Vit E on it. Hard to do it alone; it was easier during the summer when my son was at home. I am also controlling fleas with Dr. Goodpet. Didn't think of parasites, but will give him Cina, unless there is something else that you guys might recommend. I think it is stress but this cat came to me for a reason and finding someone like me to take care of him like I do is practically impossible. He would need to be in a house by himself where he is simply adored. When I spoke with a friend regarding his wanting to stay home even though the others are mean to him, she said: hey: some people go to war. He knows what he is doing and it is his choice. I appreciate you guys answering. If you have more advice, please, let me know.
