We live in a polyarchy – the real power is everywhere, in us and

around us. The manitou – powers – are more than stone spirits,

plant spirits, animal spirits. They are lights reflected from the Great

Spirit, Kitche Manitou. From the Native viewpoint, a good person is in

harmony with these powers but does not contact them out of curiosity,

collect them, use them in the service of ego, or brag about them. Ken

will share his understanding of the Manitou, including their role in

creating or curing disease. He will also explore the relationship

between traditional Native American values (respect, generosity,

courage, etc.) and a life of genuine " power " and presence. The

teachings will be interspersed with songs and healing practices. You

are also welcome to bring your questions for discussion or commentary.

At the end of the talk, Ken will sign copies of his book Honoring the

Medicine: The Essential Guide to Native American Healing, first place

winner, Best Health and Wellness Book in the U.S. (Books for a Better

Life and the National MS Foundation).

Funny you should mention this. Fr. De Smet was the greatest American

evangelist of the 19th century. He said the Amerindians were so eager to

convert to Catholicism that they would make the sign of the cross when they

saw the white man making it. He also said that if the Church had been able

to send enough priests, the Amerindians would have all converted to

Catholicism.

The Amerindians preferred Catholic priests because the priests gave

themselves body and soul to them, helping them to learn how to farm, with

medical problems, and defended them from bad whites who sought to harm them

or corrupt them with liquor. In their great suffering and poverty, the

Amerindians recognized the value of the True Faith.

In gratitude, they petitioned the American government to send them ONLY

Catholic priests, because they felt abused by the Protestant ministers. The

Amerindians said that the Protestant ministers wanted to enrich their wives

and their children at the expense of the Amerindians.

When Fr. De Smet passed away, the Amerindians howled in grief and sorrow at

hearing it. The American government confiscated his missions and the

Amerindians were in this manner forced to become Protestant.

Finally, it may interest you to know that Fr. Amorth, the chief exorcist of

Rome, said that demon possession is a rare phenomenon. Sadly, he also said

that demon possession is increasing due to interest in the occult and

witchcraft like that practiced by Amerindian witch doctors.

The Amerindians would not have accepted Fr. De Smet's medical help if they

felt it didn't work. How sad that we are regessing into paganism and

witchcraft. What would Fr. De Smet and Fr. Amorth say to that?
