I've been to a therapist and a shrink and I have been given the option

of meds. I was diagnosed with severe depression and I think of death

often. Risperdal and Celexa are what I've been recommended. Does anyone

have feedback on these meds? I had preferred not to use meds.

I was on risperdal for a bit. It made me a zombie, But, It leveled me until I

worked out the things that were antagonizing depression. If you need the help

I'd suggest you take it until you find the roots of your depression and work

through them. I did *not* say " get over it " or that it isn't a really real

disease. It is and I know there is hope and light at the end of your path..

Stick to it and get the help while you can.

In my prayers.

Hello

I too am against meds as they usually have awful side effects that

may make you feel worse long term, which defeats the purpose of

taking them in the first place. I have not heard of those

particular meds. Have you ever though of hypnosis. A really

good hypnotist can help you to access and run your mind in a

different way. Different to what you may be doing at present.

We all think of death from time to time and it need not be a bad

thing! I have studied NLP Neuro Linguistic Programming. This

is an effective tool or therapy for changing how you feel. You

should look into this and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Both are extrememly effective at making you feel differently

about yourself and life and so too is hypnosis providing you

get a good practitioner.

You could try something for me! The next time you think of

something that really upsets you I would like you to notice

whatever pictures come to mind. Notice where they are what

oolour the are how close are you to them. Are you inside them?

Or are they off in the distance? Do you say things in a certain

tone of voice? Are the images in your mind moving or still?

When you notice how you create certain feelings try altering

the loation of the picture. If it's big and bright and overwhelms

you then puch it off into the distance dim it down and play some

silly circus music when doing this. It helps to lighten it up!

If you would like further info on this I've set up a group on

; here is the link:

http://health.ThePositiveHealthGroup/

Remember to try as many thing as possible; look for what makes

you feel good and then do more of that! A simple way to heal.

Please let me know what you think of this!

I understand your fear of using the meds. I have been running from

meds for years for what was first called " severe depression " and now

has been correctly diagnosed as bipolar. Sometimes, we have to realize

that medicine is needed. However, there is a lot to be said for

natural healing as well. Anyway, I use Risperdal and have had luck,

used in combination with other meds but it is all abour YOUR body

chemistry. I have used numerous drugs that I simply told the doctor, I

WILL NOT TAKE THIS. It made me feel like a zombie. So, use your

common sense and be " in tune " with your body. If you feel within the

first 3-4 weeks that the side effects are out-weighing the benefits,

then be open and honest with your doc. It is better to be on a med

that you will stick with. Otherwise, you will go off completely and

end up at square one. Good luck, mental health is a long process and

takes a lot of work. I wish you well.

As a mental health client, i have alot of knowledge on meds. Are you

Bipolar or just depressed? Risperdal is used for Schizophrenia. My

husband takes it, and it works very well for him. Celexa is an Anit-

Depressant, but has not worked on me at all. I have been on Lithium and

Lexepro for a few years now. However, medication works as long as you

manage yourself. DON'T MESS WITH YOUR MEDS!!!!! IF THE DR PUTS YOU ON

SOMETHING, STAY ON IT AS PRESCRIBED UNTIL HE/SHE TELLS YOU TO STOP.

These types of meds DO NOT work overnight. They take time. If you

choose not to use meds at this time, then be very careful and have the

Crisis Team number handy at all times. I am also very suicidal when I

cycle into the depths of hell. Suicide (so they say)is not an

option.....and really it is not.....and this coming from a woman that

has O'D several times. Thankfully my physc dr has never presrcibed

anything that will do me in.

How to deal with depression without meds? Meditation, get involved in

something you LOVE to do, I mean something that is your passion, your

life....whatever it is...even the kids if need be. Let the family know

where you are daily. You don't need to give them details, but at

breakfast, give them a rating between 1 and 10 on the happy meter. 1

being TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL NOW BEFORE I HARM MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE

and 10 being I AM GOD AND CAN DO ANYTHING, NOTHING CAN HURT ME, I AM

THE BEST THING ON EARTH AND NOTHING CAN HARM ME. (This is bipolor by

the way). A good place to be is between 5 and 7.

If you need anything else, please contact me. I am there for you. I am

there now, being that I am just now coming out of my 1 stage. Right

now, I would say that I am a 4. See how it works?

Another thing to think about is WHY DO I FEEL THIS WAY? Is it

evironmental, or chemical? Both are dangerous things, but the

environmental situation can be easily changed. It is the chemical that

is much harder to handle.

I've been taking Celexa for years and it works well for me. I had tried

prozac and another one (can't remember name) previously and they did

not work. You may have to try different meds until you find the right

one for you. And although you probably don't feel like it, exercise is

a good thing to do. It is a natural endorphin producer. You may need to

start slow with a just a short walk and increase with time. Good luck!

Depression comes in waves. I thought I'm ok and it attacks me after

10years. I recently take St John's Wort (can't take it over 3

months) & Bach Rescue Remedy and it seems they work. Accupuncture used

to help, however, I have moved and have not found the clicked

accupunturist yet.

Good luck!

You should have your thyroid checked. I had been undermedicated for

years, which also caused severe depression and diabetes, which

hopefully, I am getting away from now.
