Eating grapefruit linked to increased breast cancer risk

17 July 2007

Br J Cancer 2007: Advance online publication

MedWire News: Women who eat a lot of grapefruit may be increasing their risk

of developing breast cancer, results of a US study suggest.

But UK experts have urged caution over the finding, saying that this is the

only study to find a link between grapefruit consumption and breast cancer.

Writing in the British Journal of Cancer, Dr K Monroe, from the University

of Southern California in Los Angeles, USA, and colleagues explain that

previous research has shown that the hormone oestrogen is associated with

the development of breast cancer, and that a molecule called cytochrome P450

3A4 helps to break down oestrogen in the human body.

As grapefruit is thought to stop this molecule from breaking down oestrogen,

the researchers say that, in theory, eating grapefruit could increase

women¹s levels of oestrogen, therefore increasing their risk of breast

cancer.

To investigate, Dr Monroe and team surveyed more than 50,000 postmenopausal

women, 1657 of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

All the participants were asked about their consumption of grapefruit over

the previous year.

The researchers found that women who ate a quarter of grapefruit or more

each day were 30% more likely to develop breast cancer than those who never

ate grapefruit.

They conclude: ³It is biologically plausible that grapefruit intake may

increase the risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women. However, the

results of the present study need to be confirmed in other studies with more

comprehensive measures of grapefruit intake.²

Commenting on the findings, Liz Baker, science information officer at Cancer

Research UK, said: " Although the chemicals in grapefruit are known to

interfere with the action of several drugs, this is the first and only study

to show a link between grapefruit and breast cancer risk, and the

researchers themselves say that the results need to be confirmed in

follow-up studies.

" What we do know is that eating a good mix of at least five fruit and

vegetables a day can reduce the risk of many diseases, including some

cancers. "
