Patriot Act Restoration Legislation: Fabulous news! A coalition of major

business organizations sent a letter to Congress October 4th, urging the

conference committee to adopt the Senate version of several sections pertaining

to business record privacy. The text of the letter is available on FCNL’s web

McCain Anti-Torture Amendment: The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday the

5th (90-9!) in favor of an amendment by Sen. McCain (AZ) to the 2006 defense

appropriations bill which would clarify and standardize interrogation procedures

for all Department of Defense employees. See FCNL’s web site for details and

“McCain Amendment” echoed in the House: The language of Sen. McCain’s

anti-torture amendment was introduced in the U.S. House October 6th by Rep.

Harman (CA). The bill (HR 3985) was referred to the House Judiciary Committee

and the Armed Services Committee. For bill text, search “Thomas” by bill number

“Frontline” on Torture: The PBS series Frontline will be showing a 90-minute

report, entitled “The Torture Question,” on Tuesday evening, October 18. The

report follows the governmental and public debate over “coercive interrogation”

and interviews policy makers, interrogators, and their subjects. Further
