New accounts from a captain and two sergeants that soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division routinely abused prisoners at a base near Fallujah in Iraq should put to rest the claim that a few rogue reservists are primarily to blame for the ever-broadening detainee abuse scandal. It is disturbing in no small measure because of the 82nd's storied past, from D-Day to Operation Desert Storm. But in the end, this sad chapter is more about a failure of leadership in the Bush administration than about the members of this justly proud fighting unit. Guantanamo Process as a Public Danger http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5099 JURIST Guest Columnist Brian J. Foley of Florida Coastal School of Law says that the less-than-rigorous procedural rules governing the tribunals and military commissions at Guantanamo Bay endanger us as surely as any terrorists... Charlie Company fights an invisible enemy http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5100 For the past three days, the men of the 82nd Airborne's Charlie Company have been chasing ghosts. Every time they fly into a valley in Chinook helicopters, the Taliban flee at the thumping sound of the rotors. Every time they walk into a village, Taliban radios crackle with news of their arrival. It's frustrating, and more than one soldier grumbles this mission is " pointless. " " It's frustrating, " says 2nd Lieutenant Ben Wisnioski of Rocky Hill, Conn. " It's like Vietnam, or the French in Algeria. We have the ability to beat these guys militarily, but they won't come out and fight us. " It's not that these men are itching to pull their triggers. But nobody wants to feel like they are wasting their time, particularly in a largely forgotten war where more than 80 US soldiers have been killed in the past six months alone. These men simply want to feel they're making a difference here. Violence Erupts in Afghanistan during Rice Visit http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5101 Rockets exploded in Afghanistan's capital on Wednesday and six soldiers and five aid workers were killed in attacks blamed on Taliban insurgents as US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited for talks. A Lose-Lose Referendum? http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5102 Five days before Saturday's referendum on Iraq's proposed constitution, the U.S. foreign policy elite appears both anxious and gloomy, increasingly worried that win or lose, the process will bring Iraq one step closer to civil war and, with it, the possible destabilisation of the wider region. The Nexus of Politics and Terror: Bogus Terror Alerts Routinely Followed Bad News for Bush http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5103 How many times must the current administration " cry wolf, " before the people catch on that the terror alerts are lies designed to distract us from their repeated failures and blunders? Keith Olbermann seems to get it: " I suggested that in the last three years there had been about 13 similar coincidences - a political downturn for the administration, followed by a " terror event " - a change in alert status, an arrest, a warning. " Read the list below and reach your own conclusion: Was Tom Ridge correct in saying terror alerts were politically motivated? Lieutenant Kills Sergeant in Iraq; One of Ten Iraq War Homicides http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5104 At a court-martial, Lt. Clifford Kent, spokesman for the Army's 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga. For Injured U.S. Troops, 'Financial Friendly Fire' http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5105 His hand had been blown off in Iraq, his body pierced by shrapnel. He could not walk. Robert Loria was flown home for a long recovery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he tried to bear up against intense physical pain and reimagine his life's possibilities. The last thing on his mind, he said, was whether the Army had correctly adjusted his pay rate -- downgrading it because he was out of the war zone -- or whether his combat gear had been accounted for properly: his Kevlar helmet, his suspenders, his rucksack. As Karl goes ... http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/?Page=Article & ID=5106 Oct. 13, 2005 | WASHINGTON -- By all rights, the day Time magazine's Matt Cooper agreed to give up his White House " double super secret " source should have been stressful for Karl Rove. The president's top political advisor had, after all, told the country that he had nothing to do with the leak of a covert CIA agent's name. Now he was on the verge of being revealed as a key player in the wide-ranging Valerie Plame investigation, an inquiry that threatened to bring indictments into the inner sanctum of the Bush presidency.
