U.N. Out of N.Y. ! IMPORTANT: *** -- Is it not time for

something more radical?

I'm not certain of the facts on the police breakup of

the Cindy Sheehan rally, but this is happening on the

same day as the trial (or jury selection) of the St.

Patrick's Four begins. I find myself thinking that

it's now or never, so I ask your advice -

What about a notice -- I am already starting to write

it -- an announcement of the beginning of a national

boycott. I would suggest that beginning tomorrow

morning, we all stop buying anything but VITAL

essentials. We cancel vacations; we wear the clothes

we have (or recycle and exchange); we TOTALLY boycott

every restaurant UNLESS we know of an independent one

that doesn't contribute to the Republicans. I know

that most of the chains are big Republican supporters.

In short, we live as if we've just gone bankrupt. For

entertainment we make sure to find out what other

supporting progressives are in our area and we hold

meetings or parties or gatherings for watching DVDs

together. Better yet, we hold outdoor speak-ins.

Could be the best time we've had in a while.

Are any of your journals interested in posting such an

announcement? I can begin to gather supporters for a

steering committee and we can update daily, also

asking the other alternative media sources to publish

--

Tell me what you think. It would go slowly at first,

but I believe Indymedia would pick it up and that it

would grow. Boycotting's no fun when you're all

alone, but when you KNOW you're all doing it together

it will become a different thing.

Please let me know your thoughts right away, and

whether you will post something in the morning. I'll

start asking activists in other groups what they

think. We KNOW what people can do. Two or three

years ago the people of Guatemala, you will recall,

held a 24-hour strike, buying NOTHING, and for a day

they controlled the country.

I think if we believe in our own power, we'll have it.

People love Cindy, and they're not going to be happy

about what happened today. If it is true that

thousands of tons of food donated by Britain for NOLA

evacuees is to be burned, they will be riper. And as

soon as they learn about the St. Patrick's Four, they

might just be ready to DO something.

Hope I don't sound like a lunatic. My rage is making

me feel like one.

Lisa/Leigh

am sending bccs to people who I want to talk to about

this right away -
