Jesse Jackson | Hurricane Looting Not Over Yet

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/091405Q.shtml

The victims have been dispersed to states across the country. Many

still sleep on cots in arenas, desperately trying to locate family

members

separated in the furies of Katrina. They are struggling with a

staggering psychological toll - destruction of homes, loss of jobs,

suffering,

abandonment, displacement to a new city, prospects unclear, past

literally under water.

Conyers Statement on CIA Leak Case

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/091405S.shtml

We are here because the Bush administration refuses to police itself in

the midst of criminal and ethical misconduct. We are here because this

Congress continues to turn a blind eye to the wrongdoing of this

administration. In July 2003, over two years ago, a Bush administration

official committed one of the most serious breaches of national

security in

recent history by disclosing to the press the identity of an undercover

Central Intelligence Agency operative. Even worse, it likely was done

for political reasons, to retaliate against the operative's husband for

successfully challenging the President's claim that Iraq had sought

nuclear material in Africa.

Judge Halts Sequoia Logging

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405EA.shtml

A federal judge halted the Bush administration's bid to keep logging

2,000 acres in Giant Sequoia National Monument, saying he questioned the

scientific analysis used to justify cutting in a preserve that houses

two-thirds of the world's largest trees.

Supporters of Stronger Mercury Controls Claim Moral Victory

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405EB.shtml

Supporters of stronger controls on toxic power-plant emissions came

within inches of scoring a major victory in the Senate. The narrow, 51-47

loss underscores the degree to which our nation's health policy has

been hijacked by polluters and industry special interests.

Why Is the Ozone Hole Growing?

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405EC.shtml

The ozone over the South Pole currently measures about 25 million

square km and may grow to become the biggest hole in history. While this

seems at odds with recent announcements that the amount of

ozone-depleting

chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the lower atmosphere has finally started

to decline, those chemicals will remain in the atmosphere for many

decades.

Dangerous Germs Destroyed at New Orleans High-Security Bio-Lab

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405HA.shtml

As rising floodwaters swamped New Orleans, Louisiana's chief

epidemiologist enlisted state police on a mission to break into a

high-security

government lab and destroy dangerous germs. Armed with bolt cutters and

bleach, Dr. Raoult Ratard's team entered the state's so-called " hot

lab, " and killed all the living samples.

Two Major Airlines File for Bankruptcy

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405LA.shtml

Two of the nation's biggest and most troubled airlines, Northwest and

Delta, filed for bankruptcy protection. Filings by Northwest and Delta

mean that half the seats available on flights in the United States would

be operated by bankrupt airlines, according to an estimate by Standard

& Poor's Ratings Services.

Union: LA Cut Corners with Utility Wages

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405LB.shtml

Workers who accidentally triggered a massive lunchtime blackout were

upgrading the city power system during peak daytime hours because the

city was " cutting corners " and reluctant to pay higher wages at night, a

union official claimed Tuesday.

Ontario Outlaws Religious Arbitration

http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/091405WA.shtml

After months of fierce protesting by Canadian and international women's

rights groups, the Ontario provincial government on Monday rejected a

2004 proposal to allow Muslims use of sharia (Islamic) law to settle

family disputes.
