Guest guest
As posted at www.primalmommies.blogspot.com September 14, 2005 Dear Friends, Like you, I am extremely concerned about the victims of Hurricane Katrina and their families, and about the response to this catastrophe. The violence with which this natural disaster ripped at Louisiana and Mississippi has exposed underlying social violence for the world to see. At the same time, violence against women and children continues, as evidenced by reports of sexual assaults in the Superdome. The board, staff and supporters of the Family Violence Prevention Fund want to speed relief to those who need it so desperately. In the midst of widespread criticism about the governmental response, there are many worthy individuals and organizations saving lives in the affected areas. Some of them have a special focus on the needs of victims of family and sexual violence. A Katrina Relief Fund tailored to amplify the voice of all those concerned about families and violence prevention has been established with a lead gift of $10,000 from the Family Violence Prevention Fund. The Fund is intended in part to aid organizations that have lost infrastructure to process assistance themselves. We invite participation in this fund so that those who may be facing multiple challenges in the wake of Katrina and other violence can get the specific help they need. The organizations benefiting from this new fund are: Louisiana Domestic Violence Coalition Relief Fund, established to help victims of domestic violence in Louisiana. The Louisiana Coalition will help the FVPF distribute funds in local communities via shelters and outreach programs that have direct links to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina most in need. lcadv.org Louisiana Rape Relief, set up by the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault, will help sexual assault victims and the rape crisis programs that have been affected by the hurricane. louisianaraperelief.org Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence, hard hit by Katrina, providing critical services to domestic violence victims throughout the state. The Coalition will help the FVPF distribute funds in local communities via shelters and outreach programs that have direct links to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina most in need. mcadv.org Survivors of Katrina continue to face unimaginable obstacles to getting on their feet. As you consider your giving options, I wanted you to know about this new fund. People who understand the courage of those who face violence in their lives - even when other circumstances are at their best - can better appreciate the enormity of the challenge for many women, children and men standing up to violence in the midst of disaster. The Family Violence Prevention Fund stands with you to join with them. Warmest regards Esta Soler President and Founder
