Summary:

At least 70 paper skeletons have appeared

mysteriously across Caracas, hanging from

overpasses, attached to railings and strewn

on the ground.

Officials have blamed the opposition, citing

the skeletons as an attempt to stir public fear.

According to news reports, the skeletons bear

anti-government messages. An envelope was

attached to one of the hand-drawn figures,

and two police officers who touched it became

ill and were briefly hospitalized for what

appeared a case of poisoning.

Authorities have assigned an anti-terrorism

unit to the case, but it remained unclear

whether any particular substance was

contained in the envelope, or how many other

packages were found with the figures.

Dozens of Paper Skeletons Appear in

Venezuela Capital, Official Blames

Opposition

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Dozens of

paper skeletons appeared mysteriously

across Venezuela's capital, hanging from

overpasses, attached to railings and

strewn on the ground, police said. One

official blamed the opposition, calling it

an attempt to stir public fear.

An envelope was attached to one of the

hand-drawn figures, and two police who

touched it became ill and were briefly

hospitalized for what appeared a case

of poisoning, police chief Luis Godoy of

the Baruta sector of Caracas said

Thursday.

National police chief Marcos Chavez said

authorities assigned an anti-terrorism unit

to the case, but it remained unclear whether

any particular substance was contained in

the envelope, or how many other packages

were found with the figures.

The 70 paper figures bore messages against

the government of President Hugo Chavez,

National Guard Gen. Jesus Ramon Villegas

told the state-run Bolivarian News Agency.

The news agency said Villegas, the vice

minister of public security, called it the work

of opposition factions trying to destabilize

the country.

Firefighters sent out a hazardous materials

team, which worked to pick up the skeletons

made of poster board and then turned them

over to the national police, Godoy told The

Associated Press.

He said the two police officers were briefly

hospitalized for observation, then were

released two hours later. Godoy said both

reported their throats feeling tight and had

difficulty breathing immediately after

touching the envelope.

The national police were analyzing the paper

skeletons that were collected to determine if

they were contaminated with any poisonous

substance, Godoy said.

Authorities also warned people to keep their

distance from the figures if they saw any of them.

Chavez, a former army paratroop commander

first elected in 1998, has become the focus of

stark divisions in Venezuela between those

who support his so-called " revolution " for the

poor and those who accuse him of authoritarian

leanings.

Chavez has survived a brief coup in 2002, an

opposition-led strike that fizzled out in 2003 and

a referendum on his government in 2004. He is

up for re-election next year, and polls suggest

he has solid support.
