PAXIL: Warning for pregnant women - DOUBLE the rate of heart

defects in babies

Hmmmm . . . now this is something Brooke Shields neglected to mention

as she

defended giving Paxil to her infant via breast milk since she took it

while

she was nursing to treat her own Post Partum Depression.

" Pregnant women taking the anti-depressant paroxetine have been advised

to

seek a doctor's advice after a study found the drug is associated with

heart

defects in babies.

" Preliminary data from the study suggest babies born to mothers given

paroxetine in the first trimester of pregnancy had a two per cent risk

of being born

with heart deformities - about twice that of newborns overall. "

And do not think that Paxil is the ONLY antidepressant that does this!

It is

not! We just don't have all of the research data to show it on the

others yet.

They all work the same way in the body/brain and will produce similar

results. The main thing that makes one more deadly than the rest is the

potential for

serotonin reuptake - the inpairment of serotonin metabolism. And Paxil

does

have a very strong effect upon serotonin metabolism, but Celexa and

Lexapro

have an even stronger effect.

Keep in mind that the main function of serotonin is " constriction of

smooth

muscle tissue. " And what are the organs of the body? Smooth muscle

tissue. When

the serotoin level becomes too high one dies via multiple organ

failure.

There is a woman around the corner from me whose baby had to have heart

surgery due to a heart defect. His mother was taking Paxil. Look around

in your own

neighborhoods. You will likely find another case. These are not

isolated

cases!

I am grateful that things like this are finally coming out, but why did

such

a serious warning take so very, very long when I was warning of similar

things

years ago? Know that these warnings do not come out sooner in order to

protect patents and in doing so, they protect drug profits!

Antidepressant warning for pregnant women

September 7, 2005 - 1:28PM

Pregnant women taking the anti-depressant paroxetine have been advised

to

seek a doctor's advice after a study found the drug is associated with

heart

defects in babies.

Australia's medicines watchdog, the Therapeutic Goods Administration,

issued

the advice today after analysing results from a large United States

study.

Preliminary data from the study suggest babies born to mothers given

paroxetine in the first trimester of pregnancy had a two per cent risk

of being born

with heart deformities - about twice that of newborns overall.

Leanne Rowe, of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners,

said

while the study findings were serious and of concern, paroxetine was

already

only prescribed with great caution in expectant mothers.

" They would only be prescribed in cases of serious mental illness and

usually

in consultation with a psychiatrist, " Dr Rowe said.

" The worry is that women who may not know they are pregnant may be

taking

these medications and so it's important for the community to also be

alerted to

this as well. "

Dr Rowe said as a general practitioner herself seeing many people with

mental

health problems, she would only rarely prescribe paroxetine in pregnant

women

with major depression who may be at risk of suicide.

" That's where you need to weigh up the benefits of the medication

against the

risks of taking it, " she said.

Dr Rowe stressed most cardiac abnormalities in babies exposed to

paroxetine

were ventricular septal defects, which often resolve spontaneously.

" The most important message is that pregnant women taking paroxetine

should

see their doctor and that they be reassured that most babies born to

mothers

who have used this anti-depressant were healthy, " she said.

Paroxetine is registered in Australia under the trade names Aropax,

Oxetine,

Paxtine, Espar, Loxamine, Paroxat CR and Ausrox.

Australia's chief medical officer John Horvath cautioned pregnant women

not

to suddenly discontinue their medication as withdrawal symptoms could

be

harmful.

" It's important for the small number of women who would be taking this

drug

not to panic but to review their treatment with their doctor, "

Professor

Horvath said.

GlaxoSmithKline, which manufactures Aroxpax, has set up a hotline for

people

seeking more information.

The number is 1800 010 462.

Not just Paxil, all psychiatric drugs are

anti-pregnancy. The pregnancy cannot get full term. As

a safe alternative, I recently came across one good

case report on a pregnant woman who was chronic

schizophrenic. She was given high dose (4gm) of omega3

and nothing else. In two to four weeks her symptoms

improved. Pregnancy went on well. In another research

report, also on schizophrenic, EPA (omega3) again

showed similar astounding results.

We already know the wonders of omega3 in depression

and bipolar.

Having said all this of omega3, I must add that a good

practitioner should take care other issues too: The

celiac disease, allergies, histamine level, heavy

metal toxicity, sugar and other addictions, pyroluria,

all or any of which can give rise to mental illness.
