Guest guest
Campaign for America's Future | www.ourfuture.org Dear Mary, Send Bush a Message for Social Security's 70th Birthday Please, join the celebration that the President wants you to forget. Send a 70th birthday celebration e-card to your friends and colleagues - and the President himself. Let them know that we should celebrate and protect Social Security, not dismantle it! GO » This Sunday, America will celebrate the 70th birthday of Social Security, the most successful social program ever created. But, President Bush doesn't want anyone celebrating. Why? Because an outpouring of public praise for Social Security's 70 years of success would deal another blow to his plans to privatize the program and turn it over to Wall Street. So, if you oppose Bush's attempts to dismantle this great American success story, we're asking you to send a birthday e-card to all your friends and family -- reminding them of the need to stop Bush and his friends in Congress from undermining and destroying Social Security. And we also invite you to join birthday celebrations all across the country -- organized by Americans United to Protect Social Security -- that will really send a message to Bush and the privatizers in Congress: Social Security is a tremendous success that we intend to celebrate -- and defend! Please, check out our Social Security birthday e-card and send it to friends, family -- and the President -- who should be celebrating with us! http://www.ourfuture.org/Happy_70th_Birthday.cfm Ten years ago, the Social Security Administration celebrated the program's 60th birthday with messages flashed across the Times Square jumbotrons and at baseball stadiums in New York, Atlanta and Cincinnati. But this year, the Bush Administration informed Social Security employees that it had no plans to conduct any celebration for the 70th birthday. It's incredible that the President has chosen to let politics trump celebration of Social Security's historical significance and its stunning success for our country. Social Security has provided 70 years of rock solid, guaranteed benefits and ensured financial security for millions of seniors, disabled workers and their families and widows, widowers and children who have lost a spouse or parent. In 1935, nearly half of all seniors were in poverty and today, thanks to Social Security, poverty among seniors has been nearly eradicated. [1] Today, Social Security provides financial security for 33 million retired workers and their dependents, 7 million survivors of deceased workers, and 8 million disabled workers and their families. [2] These are just some of the successes that President Bush wants to downplay to quiet those opposed to his plan to dismantle and privatize Social Security. Let's send a message to the President and our friends and colleagues that we should celebrate and protect Social Security, not dismantle it. Please, join the celebration that the President wants you to forget. Send a birthday e-card to your friends and family - and the President himself -- wishing Social Security a happy 70th birthday! http://www.ourfuture.org/Happy_70th_Birthday.cfm President Bush and the Washington Republicans continue to call for a risky privatization scheme that would guarantee benefit cuts for the American people, and divert billions in taxpayer money to the President's Wall Street friends. The Republican Privatization Plan will soon be introduced in the House of Representatives. So, when Congress returns from its recess in September, the battle to protect Social Security will grow even more intense. We need to have as many people as possible on call as the battle heats up - yet another good reason to rally the troops now in celebration of Social Security, a unique American accomplishment. As we prepare to step up the fight, the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt provide wise guidance: " In our efforts to provide security for all American people, let us not allow ourselves to be misled by those who advocate short cuts to Utopia or fantastic financial schemes. " Privatization is exactly the kind of fantastic financial scheme Roosevelt warned us about. We must stop it. Please take a moment today to celebrate Social Security's 70 years of success and, in doing so, send a message to those seeking to dismantle it that we intend to celebrate it for many years to come! http://www.ourfuture.org/Happy_70th_Birthday.cfm Thanks again for all you do. Sincerely, Roger Hickey, Co-Director Campaign for America's Future P.S. Our allies at Americans United to Protect Social Security are holding Social Security birthday parties across the nation. Please come to one of these parties and help us celebrate 70 years of guaranteed benefits! http://www.americansforsocialsecurity.com [1] The Century Foundation & Center for American Progress [2] Social Security Administration " When the power of love becomes stronger than the love of power, we will have peace.
