Guest guest
Dear Friends, We have often lamented in this list that medical devices/procedures/drugs are more often than not hastily pushed into the market without long term study. Now the Institute of Medicine Committee in the US has raised this point in a recent study. Health activists and medical ethicists have long been campaigning on this issue. As time rolls by the horrors and shortcomings of modern medicine and its reductionist short term approach are becoming more and more apparent. It is sad that even after realising the consequences people are not able to breach the vicious cycle. This is due to the intense fear psychosis being created in the minds of the patients and their relatives by mainstream doctors. Moreover patients who have undergone major surgery, have installed mechanical devices, are heavily dowsed with " cocktail " drug prescriptions, have had radiation and chemotherapy sessions often find it very difficult to change their mode of treatment even as they realise that the approach to their disease has been defective. The severe withdrawl effects encountered also prevent people from discontinuing the misguided mode of treatment. Most psychiatric patients are so hooked to dangerous mood altering drugs and sedatives that they cannot possibly do anything to ameliorate their condition. In the US the amount of prescription drugs consumed is so huge that all water sources have been contaminated. Prescription drugs have become an environmental hazard !!!! Today we see many peculiar diseases whose origin remains a mystery. Even the medical community suspects that these diseases may be the outcome of improper medical interventions. Overall it can be said that we have committed a very grave error by discontinuing indigenous habits, diets and medicines which have been tested for their efficacy by thousands of years of use. Recently there have been reports of an ethnic population in the West being more prone to various diseases. This can be attributed to adopting a very different lifestyle and diet. Similiar reports have come from China, Phillipines, Indonesia, India and other eastern countries suggesting that hasty introduction of many foreign habits have had a very severe repurcussion on the health of the population. As Todd has suggested in various mails, traditional diets and indigenous methods of healing should never be disregarded.
