This is one area where the disinformation specialists abound and one has to differentiate between the wheat and the chaff. This is rather hard for those of us who are committed to going the alternative route. You will get a wealth of advice and information regarding oils and fats. Most of it will be profit related ... geared to whatever product the person in question is promoting at the moment. I am not promoting a product and the information that I'm sharing is that which I've found to be effective in my own experience with cholesterol and heart disease. With prayer and high quality information which literally brought me back from a life of debilitating illness which had disabled me to the point that I would say I was confined to a chair or recliner 90% of the time. Many well meaning people will tell you that there is no connection between natural fats and cholesterol and then there are some who will tell you that you cannot control cholesterol with diet and that you will have to do it with statins and other cholesterol drugs and some will even tell you that high cholesterol is good for you and cannot be controlled because it is " genetic " . I have studied cholesterol for years and know that none of the above is true. There are two types of cholesterol and most of the fats which are in the American diet just tend to promote the bad type of cholesterol rather than the good cholesterol! The object of this email is to tell you that you can " control " your cholesterol with foods, but only if you work on elevating your good cholesterol levels rather than focus on the bad cholesterol. This can be done by diet and supplements although I prefer diet because that is typically the " source " of the " bad " fats which " must " be eliminated if you wish to correct the existing problems! I will say in advance that our American diet of processed foods is the primary problem and the reason there are so many of these problems. If you research this more you will find that with the advent of processed foods, which by the way started initially for military personnel to keep a supply of food ready for combat in Korea… cholesterol problems started to abound. This is documented in our archives if you'd wish to verify it. Even though one doesn't indulge in a fast food diet, the harmful fats exist in many of the " better " restaurants as well and even in home cooked foods depending on " fat " choices. High fat gravy, even butter is problematic in building artery plaques and contribute to thrombosis. One of the main reasons that gravies pose such a problem to our arteries is they are usually made with margarines and refined oils which contain `free radicals' and without exception are all " bleached " , " deodorized " and refined at exceedingly high temperatures! Fats and oils no matter what the " source " , which are heated to high temperatures for any period of time become " carcinogenic " and harmful to our arteries and heart and have a definite link to fat buildup (cholesterol plaque) and all the inflammatory diseases as well. This also pertains to saturated fats!~ All of our fats have to be metabolized through our liver in " special " places called Peyers Patches. This is a very small part of our immune system however it usually causes us the most problems. When we eat a vast array of " bad fats " the liver and immune system are compromised and leads to something that is called fatty liver syndrome. When we substitute monosaturated fats in extra virgin olive oil (the best form) avocadoes, raw almonds and other monosaturated " fat sources, this helps to build up our good cholesterol (HDL) which sweep the bad cholesterol out of existence and in essence, literally eradicates it from our bodies. This is why we need to eliminate all the " bad fats " and there are plenty of them on every hand. Our stores are literally filled with them. The only brand of oils that I would recommend is Spectrum Oils. Although the FDA will not allow (!!) them to say this on their product, all their oils are organically produced, which is a real blessing in this day and age with canola and other genetically engineered oils so prevalent in our society and they even exist in " so called " organic processed foods. I would advise changing over to organic if at all possible, however we must be careful when selecting organic foods as well. This is especially true of chips and other organic " processed " foods. To this day if I advertently eat any organic chips fried or baked in canola oils I experience multiple symptoms. Even though it is widely promoted as a healthy fat I wouldn't indulge in the mayos and other things made with it. Spectrum has an organic mayo which may be better however most of the mayos (even those found in health food stores) are processed with hydrogenated oils and they do not have to label this due to a technicality in processing. I learned this by hard experience and am passing it on to you. If you wish to lower your cholesterol levels do not eat any salad dressings or mayo while attempting to lower your cholesterol. They will slow down your progress considerably!! Actually the only healthy salad dressing is a homemade extra virgin olive oil and vinegar combination which you can make yourself. Most organic dressings even contain undesirable ingredients, i.e. canola and other gmo related oils. We have a special cholesterol forum on our new message boards which may help you. There are so many aspects to consider that it is impossible to mention them all here, although I have touched on the basics, it is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak. In closing I'd like to mention that I am acquainted with a young man who lowered his cholesterol from 500 to 150 in just a matter of weeks. He essentially just eliminated dairy and other saturated fats and concentrated largely on eating cold water fish, extra virgin olive oil and good fats. Three doctors told him it couldn't be done without drugs! It seems as if they were wrong!! Duh...
