Col. USAF retired) Better than anyone to date, the Media Education Foundation has quietly and accurately documented the most important history of 21st century thus far in their recent video and DVD release, Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear, and the Selling of American Empire. Hijacking Catastrophe is powerful, understated, straightforward and educational. In a single meticulously organized hour of evidence and analysis, viewers are treated to a thoughtful explanation of modern American empire, neo-conservatism as a driving force for the current Bush administration, and something I have not seen before, a real economic analysis of what is driving some of our current " global war on terror. " The film examines the Bush Administration's investment in neo-conservatism, and the early, and already horrific, results. While past performance is no guarantee of future earnings, Hijacking Catastrophe shows exactly why America's " new conservatism " is a pyramid scheme of inhumane proportions. The film examines eight aspects of the current situation of American foreign policy. The film provides an explanation for the obvious continuity between Cold War policies and those of the present. It examines long-term neoconservative thinking and how this peculiar version of Jacobin utopianism ascended from its rather inauspicious political roots. The film explores the dangerous territory of how the post 9-11 national shock was carefully cultivated by neoconservatives in Washington to support their own long-held objectives in the Middle East. Hijacking Catastrophe then documents the Pentagon and White House process of disinformation, exaggeration, and media-supported propaganda between 9-11 and America's March 2003 invasion of Iraq. It describes the neoconservative vision of military dominance over a supine, energy-rich Middle East, not only for its own sake, but as a warning to other potential international rivals. Hijacking Catastrophe describes the cost of empire in a way so comprehensive that it becomes clear that neo-conservatism, as a foreign policy guide, comes with a very real moral, political and financial garnishment of every American, and of American children yet unborn. The cost is shown not only as a current financial outlay or in lives unlived on the part of soldiers and marines, but in terms of an alarming debt burden, loss of domestic freedom, the growing and invasive state, a permanent tattering of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Guest guest
" Hijacking Catastrophe, " is headlined by the caption that it is " News You Won't Find On CNN. " Such captions infuriate me, becuase of the mindset that drives them. We're being invited into the inner sactums of leftist thought, and made to feel as if we're a select few, with access to secret and jealously guarded information. We see this mentality at Air America, that almost proudly proclaims that " It's all that's left. " The Pacifica radio network of 5 stations, is anxious to communicate to it's " listener sponsors, " that they're not going to find " this information anywhere else. " But the notion that I won't find " this information " anywhere else, will not bring me to , it will disillusion me. If the Media Education Foundation and the movie Hijacking Catastrophe, are bringing me news I won't find on CNN, that's a disaster; a reality we should resist approaching, as if we were a select, an elitist crowd. That I can't find the news on CNN, is nearly as serious a catastrophe as the catastrophe revealed in the film, regarding the Bush administration and its insane, it's lunatic and brainless empire building. The film compares this lust for power, with that seen in the Roman empire. Quite aside from the corruption and arrogance revealed in the time of the Caesers, the effort to compare the 1000 year reign of our ancestral, ancient Romans, with the scatterbrain imbecilities of the Bush adminstration, is more than I can bear. I weary, as I'm sure many of the rest of us do, of the constant effort to uncover ever more of the insane bumbling and destructiveness of this current administration. Hijacking Catastrophe ought to be as much about media as it is about the Bush gang. Perhaps much more about media. Taking this new perspective would re-invigorate our debate and our strategies, give us a new and desperately needed change of focus. Media are our major obstacles, not the Bush administration, which would not last a single election cycle withought media support and bias in their favor. There is a stubborn refusal on the left, to acknowledge this reality. This post will be met with the argument, that the Bush administration is, after all, the real threat, the real-world reality we face. But this is misguided. Because we continue to underestimate media, and its efforts to destroy leftist thought in contemporary society, we're now faced with 8 years of Bush. God knows what the near future will bring, if we continue to act as if we can ignore media and its effecs on the political climate in this country, and brag about the exclusivity we leftists enjoy when we scramble around in media (mostly so-called " underground " media) looking for " our " information.
