Guest guest
Hi All, I posted some of our Codex e-mails to a local alt. health group, and someone has replied with a couple of URLs from the FDA with reassurances that Codex laws wouldn't restrict our access to supplements (yeah, ask a wolf how safe the sheep is!): http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/dscodex.html http://www.nnfa.org/services/government/EUdir_Codex_QA.htm Here's a couple of snippets, one from each URL: " WTO and WTO dispute panels do not have the power to change U.S. law. If a WTO decision in response to a dispute settlement panel is adverse to the U.S., only Congress and the Administration can decide whether to implement the panel recommendation, and, if so, how to implement it. " " In sum, no amendment, repeal or other change to DSHEA would be required, as a matter of U.S. law. Since the Codex Supplement Guidelines do not require any change to DSHEA, the guidelines will not have any practical impact on sales of dietary supplements in the United States, by either suppliers or retailers. DSHEA will continue to govern domestic sales. " I thought that the WTO did sanction the U.S. already for something to do with steel exports? Can anyone help me out? TIA, Naomi
Guest guest
I wrote and asked John Hammel from IAHF for his comments: " WTO and WTO dispute panels do not have the power to change U.S. law. " Very misleading statement, but what else would you EXPECT from the FDA? The implication here is that the WTO lacks the ability to pressure Congress into changing our laws so as to conform to international law. That is patently false. The WTO's Dispute Settlement Body is a new international court that doesn't follow our rules of evidence, its a rigged star chamber proceeding designed to favor the business interests of the same multinational corporate powers with whom the FDA has a revolving door. The WTO's Dispute Settlement Body has the ability to impose cross sector trade sanctions against huge sectors of our economy, then if Congress elects NOT to conform to international law, massive fines get imposed on various sectors of our economy, say on Florida Citrus growers, or on our Steel Industry, either of which have enormous lobbying power on Capital Hill to pressure congress into relieving this imposition. Read the book WTO- Whose Trade Organization? by Lori Wallach, JD, of the Global Trade Watch Division of Public Citizen. She has documented numerous instances in which Congress has been pressured into changing our laws under the threat of trade sanctions. Guest guest
Thanks, Loretta! This is just what I was looking for; I sent it to the list. I also sent a Codex e-mail to practically everyone I know, and have only gotten two responses. It's kind of discouraging, but maybe it planted a seed. Guest guest
You are certainly welcome. I hope that everyone will post those answers on every forum that they are on and will send out to all friends/family. This is what it takes to educate people---giving them an answer to their specific questions. There has seemed to be a " mystery " about CODEX in that many people just didn't understand what the ramifications could be, especially when CAFTA was added to the mix. I still have people that ask " what is the bottom line about CODEX. " And that is *the* question to answer. We need to make sure that the answers we give are factual and correct because many articles have circulated the internet that are just not true. This causes confusion which breeds apathy. But again, I see the apathy toward CODEX that I see everyday in people when educating them about their health concerns. It's the " I just don't believe that our government would/will allow this to happen " mentality. <sigh> As everyone knows we are at a very critical point. This week each representative's office *should* be over-flowing with mail and phone calls about the vote that is coming up on July 11th. In fact they should be so inundated that the nightly news picks it up as a worthy story. Let's not hold our breath on that one! LOL! They should be so inundated that they really, really know their job could be on-the-line!! Have a great day, everyone! _____ On Behalf Of Naomi Giuliano Thursday, July 07, 2005 4:35 AM Re: Need more Codex info for groups Thanks, Loretta!
