The reason for this request is that the particular post being replied here is addressed to this author primarily and other members become secondary. For this reason, the post did not attract the attention it deserved. However, one more reiteration of the fact that this list belongs to all, irrespective of their country, sex, disease, profession, bias etc. We are here to discuss the ayurveda, without displacing other good healing practices. We dont become " good " by calling others " bad " . This post refers to all healing practices. This author points out deficiencies in certain modern foods and medicines only because his patients come loaded with toxins of modern medicine/foods and a long time goes in cleaning those by ayurvedic means. Even homeopathy needs to prescribe medicines for this purpose. Secondly, in several cases visiting him after frustrating experience from modern medicine, the toxins surfaced on skin were clearly visible at very start, and after proper ayurvedic blood cleanse, the skin became normal in few days time. Health is a harmonious equilibrium state of mind, body and soul. (Msg# 3832). A few scattered related statements are: It is possible to give energy for the development of body mind and sole of the child in the womb by listening to special music. (msg# 3948). The secret of yogasanas and breathing techniques yielding so many benifits is also one more. Along with Chakras, the nadis which travel all along body organs get activated for rapid conductivity of cosmic energy. There are several important Nadi-vigyan critical points located all along legs, hands, chest and a large number on stomach. (Msg#3833). Good yoga teachers ask the students to note the asana time by counting breaths, not clock time. The advanntage is, while counting breaths, you observe breath also, " prana dharana " being the term, and mind becomes automatically thought-less or nearly so. When mind becomes thoughtless, the demand of brain on heart, normally 30% of total cardiac output, reduces to just 10% or so, releasing extra 20% load on heart. This also happens in meditation, giving the secret of meditation as hypertension cure. Liver, heart muscle and some other muscles in body have certain capacity to regenerate, if given adequate rest by observing fast or meditation. The best example of mind-body correlation is given by the experiments on dogs carried out decades ago. Dogs were fed and just few minutes before feeding a bell was ringing always. Later it was observed that dogs started salivating whenever bell used to ring. The bell used to cause this mind-body reaction. Importance of mind is brought out by Jagannath also in msg#4026, where he says controlling mind alone is adequate. Mind-body connection is used by midwives to encourage adrenals of a laboring mother. Thoughts of her baby make her bear the pain. Under the " informed consent " , several mothers have left decision to healer, stating " do what is best for my baby " . Mother never thinks about herself, first thought that comes to her mind is baby's well being. The reason why simple home remedies often show wonderful reasults is that they are told by mother or grand-mother. They have nothing but love to offer. Same fact is used by spiritual healers and yogis. When you approach a yogi, your faith on him, the thought that now you are going to get well, itself is 50% medicine. When Jagannath Chatterji says a healer must inspire confidence in patient by his austere behaviour, the purpose is to invoke the mind-body connection for healing. This author has also sometimes committed mistake while prescribing, and was surprised to see that the medicine worked despite not being used for that purpose normally! Often, it is found that there is subtantial difference between what patient says about his symptoms and what his pulse tells. This may be due to misunderstanding of Kapha with phlegm, heat with Pitta and Gas with Vata. Vaidya must ignore the terminology of patient and correctly diagnose on the basis of symptoms+pulse according to his experience. Ayurveda is a unique philosophy, where touch with the fingers in pulse diagnosis invokes patients mind and focus. Touch language is universally recognised, starting at the birth itself. A crying baby knows mothers touch and will not become silent till mother has held her. The change in the pulse during the time diagnosis is going on, tells the healer whether patient trusts him or not. Contrasts this with " white coat syndrome " wherein patients B.P. always measures high in " clinic " only. If ayurvedic vaidyas start wearing western clothes and white coat, they will also invoke similar response! Stress can be easily diagnosed using pulse as well as certain accupressure points in the sole of the feet. If one repeats pulse/B.P. measurement after asking patients to take 5 breaths with heavy inhale and slow exhale, the loss in pulse rate and systolic B.P. tells about stress. Ancient texts mention doing pulse check three times in an appointment. Just a simple morning walk for 10 minutes will relieve his hypertension by about 10 points! The very sight of early morning, rising sun has such a profound effect on mind! The village life style in India even today requires visiting outskirts every morning, where sounds of birds, and morning signs take care of stress. Stress is a city phenomenon, and so hypertension is caused predominatly by stress. Patients narrate their experience: " Cardiologist told me that I must walk 3.5 kms everyday. Since my legs are paining, how can I? " " OK as ayurvedist, I too tell you to walk, but just start with only 100 meters. every week add 20 meters. " He is able to reach 5 km a day in just six months. This gradual step-by-step approach has yielded so many benifits to many. This approach works in all Vatic diseases. Simple exercises, step-by-step increase in time and intensity worked wonders in case of obese women. Their problems about lack of time due to household chores must be solved first. In India, a woman never visits a doctor alone. Some family member will always accompany her. And if she takes your time in telling how family members increase her work load, how they do not co-operate etc. let her out with all her complaints! Once mind becomes empty, she is more receptive to what Vaidyas say. Vaidyas, after long association with patients from a family can assume a role of elderly doing ear- pinching of erring family members! An aged woman visited this author once, along with her husband. After noting that she had lot of stress, this author wanted to know her family life. She used to have frition with daughter-in-law daily, the reason being her son was no more paying respect to her. The grand- son wanted to spend time with grand-ma but was not allowed by daughter-in-law! Growing children are so much like anti-depressant medicines for grand parents. She wanted to go to old age home now and asked if this author knew some good old age homes. After sending her back with some mild medicines, author called her son and daughter-in-law. They were told that their medicine expenditure could be cut to 25% if they changed their family environment. After a month, when the old lady was given a phone call to tell that a good old age home was located, she answered; " Doctor, I have changed my plans. And forget what I told you about my daughter-in-law. She is very good to me now. I am on way to being grand ma second time! My whole time goes in playing with my grand-son and not getting time to take your medicines. Half of them are still left over. Since my problems have significantly reduced, can I send them back for some other poor patient? " This is not the fabricated story. She is a Mumbai patient, turning 72 next month. With many patients, author has understood that women differ a lot from men. MOre about it at some other time. Chemicals in herbs give only 50% help. Since discussion on garlic is going on the list, let this author add his two cents. Jain patients have aversion to honey. Hence any tablets, before prescribing, author asks them can they take with honey? Though most answer affirmatively, author presctribes them with ghee/milk and earns their love, since respecting others feeling/religion is a must in this profession. There is no need to tell those who are addicted to intoxicants like tea, coffee, alcohol, smoking etc to stop. " Medicine will reduce your craving. You help medicine further by not smoking when there is no strong urge " . This statement has yielded wonderful results! This author also could quit cigarette when someone said " True love is giving not receiving, right. Let me see. Give me your cigarette! " See how patient-healer relationship works! The relationship should be like mother-baby relationship. In agreement with what Todd says in a recent post, the patients gifts are offered out of appreciation and affections. As long as they are inexpensive, the intention is clear, Vaidyas can accept, but tell patient not to bring it again. In conclusion, author would say that every alternate healer should learn other philosophies to some extent In conclusion, treat mind first, infuse confidence in patients mind first. If he/she knows that you mean " Do no harm " , patient is yours for life time. And the satisfaction that you could be of some help to few, itself will keep Vaidya's health in " gold " condition.
