Urgent Alert: Protect Your Freedom to Read

Protect the Freedom to Read

 

Just last year, the House of Representatives came within one vote of

revoking one of the worst elements of the Patriot Act. Under Section

215, the FBI can demand that bookstores and libraries hand over lists

of all of their patrons and what books they've purchased or borrowed.

Adding insult to injury, it also prevents bookstore owners and

librarians from telling patrons they're being watched or searched.

Representative Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has re-introduced his bill -- the

Freedom to Read Amendment -- that would prevent the FBI from carrying

out these types of searches. The vote will take place this week -- so

take action now and help roll back the invasive PATRIOT Act starting

with one of its most controversial provisions.

Dump the Dirty Energy Bill

 

This week, the Senate is scheduled to begin debate on an energy bill

that is an oil and gas industry lobbyist's dream. It has billions in

subsidies for well-connected fossil-fuel corporations -- including one

run by former Enron executives -- and no action whatsoever on fuel

economy standards.

It's clear that given the current makeup of Congress, any energy plan

that can pass will be heavily tilted to corporate interests and

destructive to our nation's energy security, air quality and public

lands. We need meaningful and positive energy legislation, not more

dependence on fossil fuels. Bush's energy bill deserves to be

defeated, using a filibuster if needed.
