Their major blunder - some might contend- was poor planning for the Iraq war. Make no mistake, this was no mistake. Too few Troops from the " Coalition of the Willing " were sent and a stabilized Iraq was never the goal. The same could be said about an exit strategy. If you do not plan on leaving the country you occupy you do not need an exit strategy. Rather, you need enough cannon fodder and media oversight to perpetuate the cultural, spiritual, and blood-lust rape of a nation- the peoples of which understand occupation all to well. The war planners understand this understanding and fully intended to invoke both a huge resistance - to be pacified - and a civil war. Yet the major flaw of the war planners was to make the assumption that there would be no major resistance from the US populace and any upsurgence which might occur could easily be contained. It is most unfortunate that the US Congress bought into the war. One would almost have to assume that US military and economic hegemony is a principle accepted by the full spectrum of politicians - with total disregard for life both inside and outside US borders. How else could the authorization for the use of force against Iraq (PDF) be issued and implemented - specifically when most of the major elements of this Law proved to be untrue before military action was taken. The National Intelligence Estimate of 2002 proved to show little support for the contentions that the Bush Administration put forth as a means by which to justify their illegal invasion of a sovereign nation- the supreme international crime. Illegal because it is a violation of the US Constitution, the War Powers Resolution, the UN Charter, The Geneva Conventions, and so on down the list of internationally accepted statutes which are intended to prevent such heinous actions of any nation state against another. If the Legislative and the Executionary branches of the US Government were mutually complicit in a greedy and megalomaniacal grab for the Iraq's resources - (as pointed out by Wolfowitz as well as implicitly stated in Rebuilding America's Defenses (PDF) - the Neocon recipe book for US Military hegemony (a.k.a. Full Spectrum Dominance) in the passage " the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein " (i.e. if Saddam was not in power the US would still have to invade Iraq)), they must have assumed that they could get away with it. The key to this is to suppress any resistance at home From outside of the US it might appear as if there is no resistance in the homeland. Even from inside the US one who assumes to understand the Neocon agenda might be persuaded to believe this. However, this is a poor and inaccurate interpretation of events. Those of us in the US who understand what it means to be an American have remained true to form and our voice is starting to resonate through the main stream media and the chambers on Capitol Hill. A solid foundation of independent journalists, legal scholars, concerned citizens, and the like have firmly rooted themselves in the notions by which this nation was founded, and it's Constitution established. While it is true that the main stream media is totally complicit in war crimes, it has been somewhat advantageous that this resistance movement grew in relative silence. A silence by which an informed and organized movement has formulated itself such that, at the opportune moment, we could expose ourselves as a fully matured entity. Well, that moment has come to pass. The leaking of the Downing Street Memo has given Rep. John Conyers, Jr., Ranking Member of House Judiciary Committee, the tool he - and other Democratic Members - needs to hold a Democratic hearing to hear testimony concerning the Downing Street Minutes and the efforts to cook the books on pre-war intelligence - possibly leading to the impeachment of senior members of the Bush Administration. This hearing would not be possible, however, if there was not a tremendous response from concerned citizens who understand the nature of the Bush Administration's massacre in the middle east and the undermining - and effective shredding- of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. While one can argue that the vast minority of Americans remain clueless as to the nature of defending oneself against a tyrannical regime - which is essentially the only thing the US Constitution was written for (i.e. a balance of power so that not one person or branch of government can concentrate power), this concerned citizen contends that those brave and noble souls here in the US have remained true to form and had only to work hard and move at the right moment - which has now come to pass. Whatever your political persuasion is, it is now high time for you to demand that Bush, Cheney, et. al. answer the questions presented to them by Conyers regarding the Downing Street Memo. If one allows their disposition to impede the flow of logic they do no justice to the system and are not acting out their responsibility required under the US Constitution. To those afraid to acknowledge truth and admit their own mistakes, it is high time you come to terms with the facts that the ever shifting reasons for invading Iraq have proven to be complete fabrications. The US was not greeted with candy and flowers and both Iraq and Afghanistan are a bloody mess. Remember, the murder of tens of thousands of Iraqi's and thousands of coalition casualties was done in your name with your tax dollars. It is time to demand justice. With no pre-determined conclusion, an inquiry into the justification for an apparently premeditated war is the minimal necessity which every single US citizen should demand. Since every single citizen has not come to this conclusion and an unreasonable percentage of Americans continue not to get any information from the main stream media, the responsibility lies upon those of us who have a clue. And there are many more of us than was assumed. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ © 2005 NPInternational/ Adam Roufberg Adam Roufberg is an educator, physicist and biologist.
