If you live in Silicon Valley,

the Consumer Federation of California needs your help!Corporate Secrets Can Kill

- But Your Call Can Help

Talking Points for your call:

I urge you to vote YES on Assembly Bill 1700, introduced by Assemblywoman Fran

Pavley, on the Assembly Floor.

AB 1700 would prohibit secrecy agreements in lawsuit settlements that keep the

public from knowing about a danger that could cause death or injury.

We know that big businesses will pay millions in hush money to settle individual

lawsuits brought by victims, yet continue to sell a defective and dangerous

product to the public.

Dangerous drugs like Vioxx, defective Ford/Firestone tires, exploding GM gas

tanks, toxic contamination by PG & E - all are examples of corporations hiding

their knowledge of defective products and dangerous practices.

Often, during the pre-trial discovery that occurs when a lawsuit is filed, vital

facts about a dangerous product or business practice are unearthed. Companies

should NOT be allowed to keep this information secret.

AB 1700 would ban the practice of requiring secrecy concerning public dangers in

the settlement of a lawsuit. The public has the right to information that could

save our lives.

We need to know the facts when our lives and safety are on the line. Please vote

YES on AB 1700.
