Guest guest
atracyphd2 Fri, 27 May 2005 02:27:16 EDT [drugawareness] New SSRI for Premature Ejaculation - Dapoxetine In the article below the 20th paragraph reads:  Dapoxetine is an SSRI-like drug designed for premature ejaculation. It is superior to SSRIs because it moves quickly through the body and doesn't need to be taken daily, Althof said. Did someone want to make sure the men were not being left out of this SSRI nightmare? We already have women taking Prozac, under the brand name Serafem, for PMDD. Even though we have learned just over a year ago that PMDD is a disorder that does not exist in England & the maker, Eli Lilly, has warned that it should not be taken by British women for this nonexistent disorder, US women apparently do suffer from this nonexistent disorder. Serafem (Prozac) is what they take for it once a month for about a week and then they stop abruptly - the worst way anyone can take an antidepressant. Why is that the worst way to take one of these drugs? Withdrawal. The body is going in and out of withdrawal over and over again. This is such a shock to the brain and the entire glandular system that it can lead to some very serious reactions. So, now, we are going to have men going in and out of withdrawal too as they take this drug to prevent premature ejaculation. SSRIs have been promoted and prescribed for this for a very long time now. And as I said in my book, considering the effects of these drugs upon the sex drive over time, you don't need to worry about any kind of ejaculation at all. So in that sense these drugs are VERY effective in preventing premature ejaculation. I do not think this is the type of negative effect most men would expect from this new drug. Of course what worries me most is that now we will have that many more men suffering suicidal and hostile thoughts and actions, along with manic reactions, etc., due to the abrupt withdrawal. These would be triggered each time it is used and then abruptly discontinued - similar to what women have been suffering as they go in and out of withdrawal each month taking Serafem for PMS once a month. This is clearly a very dangerous idea, but then so was Viagra, and that is still on the market as well. But, since SSRIs produce suicide at double the rate, I cannot argue with the fact that suicide is a VERY effective preventative for premature ejaculation. Now Johnson & Johnson soon might sell a pill to prevent premature ejaculation. If the Food and Drug Administration approves the drug, dapoxetine, it would become the first designed to prevent premature ejaculation, potentially setting it up to become the next Viagra in terms of sales. More business news • Latest news, columnists • Local stocks • Market tools • Mortgage rates • Gas prices " I'm sure we'll have lots of jokes about this. I try to keep this serious, " said Stanley Althof, a West Palm Beach psychologist and one of the investigators on the drug's clinical trials. " Nobody dies from rapid ejaculation, but it really is distressing. " About 30 percent of men have this condition, according to the World Health Organization, far more than the 12 percent who have erectile dysfunction, which Viagra treats. " The market is huge, obviously. It's like when Viagra was introduced, " said Le Anne Zhao, an analyst for Caris & Co. in New York City. Researchers released phase three clinical trial data for dapoxetine Monday at the American Urologist Association's annual meeting in San Antonio. Phase three is the last of the trials before a drug seeks FDA approval. The drug could be on the market as early as the end of the year, Zhao said. Johnson & Johnson declined to comment on the drug because the FDA is reviewing it. The clinical trial, which tested the drug on 2,614 men with premature ejaculation, found that the men could increase their staying power during intercourse from about 55 seconds to an average of more than three minutes by taking 60 milligrams of the drug one to three hours before having sex. This compared with one minute and 45 seconds for men taking the placebo. The results fall short of those for healthy men, but Althof, who runs the Center of Marital and Sexual Health of South Florida in West Palm Beach, said this would be a major improvement for men with premature ejaculation. " If you were a man who ejaculated in 30 seconds, that would be like a six-fold increase for that man, " he said. " That's a lot. While it might not reach where the normal men are, it's significant. " Althof was the principal investigator on a study published in this month's issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, which determined that healthy men's erections last an average of seven minutes after penetration. Anything under two minutes is considered premature. Men in the clinical trial also reported sharp increases in sexual satisfaction and control over ejaculation. Dapoxetine could be a blockbuster drug for Johnson & Johnson. It could have $1 billion in sales, Zhao said. If and when it hits that mark depends on men's willingness to admit to needing the drug. " Some men don't want to talk about it, so the market may take a long time to open up, " she said. Dr. Bruce Kava, a urologist at the University of Miami who specializes in cancer surgery and sexual dysfunction, said he thought sales of the new drug would increase slowly and won't be as strong as Viagra. With erectile dysfunction, " there's a physical problem that's an all-or-nothing situation, " Kava said, adding that studies have shown that men with premature ejaculation don't have a lot of sexual dissatisfaction. " It's going to take some coaxing from partners. " Kava also said that, unlike erectile dysfunction, which affects primarily older men, premature ejaculation affects men of all ages. " You're dealing with a younger age group and they're less likely to admit to sexual problems, " he said. " Many of them might not realize they have a problem. " For years, premature ejaculation has been treated with behavioral therapies and was thought to be a psychological problem. More recently, doctors have determined that the problem is partly biological and have begun treating it with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which are used to treat depression. The SSRIs have a side effect of low sexual desire. Dapoxetine is an SSRI-like drug designed for premature ejaculation. It is superior to SSRIs because it moves quickly through the body and doesn't need to be taken daily, Althof said. " I treat this psychologically and have for years. But we don't have a lot of trained sex therapists, " Althof said. " I think the most effective treatment is to take a pill and get counseling.
