Please FAX all of your local US senators and congressmen your

support / opposition to these bills. A focused fax campaign is an

effective way to join the fight. Time is running out, so send a fax

today, and send another fax tomorrow! Fax two key vitamin proponents,

Senators Tom Harkin at 202-224-9369 and Orrin Hatch at 202-224-6331,

to let them know you will support their fight for vitamins with your

votes. Fax vitamin adversary Senator Dick Durbin at 202-228-0400, and

tell him you will oppose him to save vitamins. Fax Senator Michael

Enzi, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Health, Education, Labor

and Pensions, at 202-228-0359. Tell Senator Enzi that you feel AER

for vitamins is a gross violation of your health rights.

Legislative assaults are have been introduced into the US Congress

which make will take away many of the health freedoms we still enjoy.

Please send a fax to let your Congressional delegation know that you

strongly oppose these legislative health freedom threats:

Oppose S722

The Dietary Supplement Safety Act. Food Supplements are currently

protected as foods under the 1994 Dietary Supplements Health

Education Act (DSHEA). They are therefore not regulated by the FDA, a

government organization which has repeatedly shown its strong

favoritism toward the pharmaceutical industry. S722 will gut the

provisions of DSHEA and make supplements drugs rather than foods. The

numbering on this bill will change when it is reintroduced for

consideration by the 109th Congress but the intent of the new bill

will include the repeal of DSHEA and the regulation of food

supplements as drugs under the FDA.

The right to safe, effective and affordable supplements is protected

by DSHEA. During the 108th Congress bills were introduced in both the

House and Senate to drastically gut DSHEA. This is likely to happen

again in the current (109th) Congress.

Foods and food supplements have an extraordinary record of safety

which is far better than most conventional drugs. None the less, some

forces in Congress want to make supplements drugs. This will sharply

limit the number and dosages of supplements which will be available

to you and significantly increase the price. Drug testing is

phenomenally expensive, costing hundreds of millions of dollars.

Since supplements cannot be patented, supplement manufacturers have

no way to recoup testing expenses for items in the public domain like

Vitamin C, niacin, Vitamin E, Co Q 10 and amino acids.

DSHEA gives the FDA all the authority it requires to police the

market place and keep supplements clean and well-labeled. The FDA has

failed to uphold the law and Congress is now being asked to pass a

law which punishes not the FDA but the American consumer with less

availability and higher prices for " new " drugs which are safe and

widely available.

Rather than providing real safeguards for the American Public S722

will not only make supplements into drugs and requiring that the FDA

uphold DSHEA, it will also create a mandatory reporting requirement

for adverse reactions for nutrients, but not for drugs, in the United

States. S722 gives the FDA sole discretion to pull a substance that

receives even one adverse event report. Supplements, nutrients and

natural treatments in general have an admirable and enviable safety

record. They bring with them virtually no dangerous side effects or

deaths when used properly, compared to allopathic medical treatments

which have been abundantly documented to pose significant toxic

threats. But under S722, there are no safeguards to keep the FDA from

removing supplements as it sees fit.

For example, on the basis of a very small number of questionable

complaints about Ephedra possibly linking it with liver failure and

death, Ephedra was banned in the United States. Adderal, on the other

hand, has been withdrawn by the Canadian Government because of 20

deaths in children but the FDA sees no need to withdraw the drug.

Recent events have made clear that seriously harmful drugs and

treatments have been approved and maintained while natural materials

like amino acids, nutrients, EDTA, herbs and vitamins have been

touted as unsafe using poor science and statistical manipulation to

slant the results.

S722 is part of a well-orchestrated attempt to limit and ultimately

eliminate therapeutically effective natural substances. Tell your

Congressional Delegation that you strongly oppose S722 and all

similar legislation and you look for your elected representatives to

strengthen, rather than weaken, the health freedoms of all Americans.

Send faxes to Congress.

Oppose HR 3377

The Dietary Supplement Access and Awareness Act. This is a companion

piece to S722 which similarly restricts access and requires reporting

of any adverse event for nutrients, but not drugs. This bill also

requires the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) but

contains so many serious threats to access and availability of

natural substances that it, too, must be defeated to protect our

health rights. Tell your Congressional Delegation that you strongly

oppose HR3377 and all similar legislation and look to your elected

representatives to strengthen, rather than weaken, the health

freedoms of all Americans. HR 3377 is part of a well-orchestrated

attempt to limit and ultimately eliminate therapeutically effective

natural substances. Send a fax to Congress.

Oppose CODEX ALIMENTARIUS

We anticipate legislation to " harmonize " us with the severely

restrictive and very dangerous regulations of the World Trade

Organization. Find out why we must flood the offices of Congress with

a minimum of one million letters opposing CODEX ALIMENTARIUS, S722

and HR 3377 in the next four months. Legislation attempting to

harmonize the US with the very restrictive standards set by the CODEX

ALIMENTARIUS COMMISSION has been introduced and defeated repeatedly

in the US Congress. It is the intention of the WTO and supporters

to " harmonize " the US with the CODEX ALIMENTARIUS regulations just as

Australia, the EU and Canada are being " Harmonized " .

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS is a complex set of technical regulations which

increase pesticide and other toxic residues, permit genetically

modified organisms (GMOs), many of which cannot germinate without the

use of specific pesticides, authorize the irradiation of food and

eliminate all but 28 ultra low dose nutrients. Doses higher than

those found in foodstuff of supplements and nutrients and other

substances are banned under CODEX ALIMENTARIUS. In fact, they are

interdicted substances much like cocaine or heroin.

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS will have a cumulative and negative effect on your

health and that of the people you care about! Tell your Congressional

Delegation that you strongly oppose any and all legislation which

restricts access to natural products and which increases toxicity in

the environment and that you look to your elected representatives to

strengthen, rather than weaken, the health freedoms of all

Americans. " Harmonization is part of a well-orchestrated attempt to

limit and ultimately eliminate therapeutically effective natural

substances.

Send a fax to Congress indicating your opposition.

Support HR 1146

The American Sovereignty Restoration Act. This legislation reasserts

the sovereignty of the US Constitution as the law of the land in the

United States. Sadly, the need to reassert this basic legal code is

urgent and severe.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has developed highly restrictive

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS and European Supplement Directive standards which

control and essentially eliminate access to all therapeutically

active natural supplements and nutrients. These standards will take

precedence over US law since the regulations of the WTO supersede the

laws of the member states according to the treaty itself. HR 1146

reasserts the sovereignty of the United States in setting its own

standards even if those standards differ from those of the WTO or

other international bodies. Currently, the " voluntary " standards of

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS have been enacted as law in Australia, the

European Union and Canada and are being phased in. Only a limited

number of very low dose supplements and nutrients are permitted under

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS. All substances not specifically permitted are

specifically forbidden under CODEX ALIMENTARIUS standards.

The current FDA Policy on Standards * states " where a relevant

international standard exists, or completion is imminent, it will

generally be used in preference to a domestic standard…. " Thus,

without a law to restore legislative sovereignty to America we are

bound to abide by the destructive regulations of the WTO. In short,

without HR 1146, our health freedoms will be destroyed. Tell your

Congressional Delegation that you strongly support HR1146 and all

similar legislation and look to your elected representatives to

strengthen, rather than weaken, the health freedoms of all Americans.

Send a fax to Congress.
