It also causes swelling of the liver and kidneys, and CALCIFICATION of the kidney. Thanks, JM Hey folks- Pardon the impersonal broadcast email, but I wanted to share with you a recent experience. Two weeks ago, I started experiencing severe fatigue problems. Every day at 4 pm, my eyes would start closing and it would last right through dinner. I also experienced extreme soreness up and down my legs and back, as if I had just completed a masochistic 3-hour workout (or built another deck) - the only problem was that I had not been working out at all because I woke up so tired in the morning, that I could barely drag my butt out of bed 90 minutes after my alarm went off. I also was waking up in the middle of the night with extreme muscle soreness. At first I thought it was a virus, but by the end of the week, I was completely de-motivated and, quite frankly, depressed - I had no real desire to do much of anything after I got home from work, and had no desire to get myself up in the morning. At times, I felt completely detached from my body. (While this description could be used on any given to describe any of our Dilbert-esque existences working for " the man " , my experience this particular week was quite different than I anything I had ever experienced). Long story short, Chris and I went back over the previous week to see if anything had changed. Turns out, the only real change I had made was drinking a " sports drink " called Propel. Previously, I had not been drinking enough water (too boring), so I was looking for something with a little flavor, but not the calories of Gatorade. Propel is one such drink (from the makers of Gatorade), and it is frequently given out after 5K races as a marketing promotion. Starting on April 4, and for the next 10 days, I drank one container (16 oz = 2 cups), sometimes two, of Propel everyday at work. I had also been drinking another similar beverage from Target (forgot the name) that Chris had gotten me. Given it was so sweet but had only 5 calories, I was wondering what the heck gave it its flavor. Turns out there was an ingredient called " sucralose " which turns out is an artificial sweetener along the lines of Nutrasweet. Sure enough, Propel had it too. It also is marketed under the brand name " Supra " . A quick google search uncovered some very scary information about the product (see one such link below). All of my symptoms were evident in testimonials posted by others on the web - fatigue, drowsiness, depression, etc. Turns out, sucralose/Supra is really dangerous stuff. Basically, they take a sugar molecule and replace portions of it with Chlorine; the resuling molecule has the same make-up as DDT and other pesticides. From what I gather, it was rushed to market and there have not been adequate studies of its effects on humans. The marketers presented some evidence that the substance is not absorbed by the body; but a recent japanese study indicated that up to 40% is absorbed. Anyway, I pass this along as a heads up.....it was a pretty scary two weeks. I went back to plain old water last Wednesday, and started feeling good again within 48-72 hours. Obviously everyone's body is different, and mine is probably on the more sensitive side. But if you are drinking Propel or using some reduced calorie food product, check the label for sucralose and make sure you are not experiencing these types of symptons. JM Drug-Free School Zone?
