Guest guest
Howdy Folks, Does anyone know where to get Carnuba Wax .. for polishing hardwood floors? I can't STAND the petrol based harwood floor wax stuff which smells like permanent marker times a million, especially since it is 18 degrees out and I can't really open the windows to ventilate ... I did actually use almond oil to polish them (and it sucked up the oil like a sponge), but I do think a hard wax is in order here, not a liquid oil THANKS! *Smile* Chris (list mom) Buy One Get One Free Year End Soap Sale! http://www.alittleoflactory.com
Guest guest
Hey Chris Don't know about Carnuba, BUT... Bee's wax is supposed to be wonderful. How about bee's wax mixed with a little cocoa butter and some nice nut oil, just to make it that little bit soft? Cheers! Guest guest
Hmm, good sounding idea .. Just wondering .. has ANYONE EVER tried anything even remotely like this on their harwood floors? I felt a little kooky for slathering my floor with oil! (but my two year old was having a slip sliding blast with it! *LOL*) *Smile* Chris (list mom) Buy One Get One Free Soap Sale! Guest guest
Or go to a woodworking supply store, there are plenty of nice wood waxes out there, and many are nice, mild and non petroleum based. -- Chris Ziegler <chrisziggy1 Sun, 30 Dec 2001 18:07:19 -0700 Carnuba Wax For Hardwood Floors ... Guest guest
I've used beeswax on hardwood floors many times. Usually it still has some honey in it (so it smells great). Adding some cocoa butter or some oil sounds like a good idea. Heck add some good smelly oils while your at it. I've always just scrubbed the floors with a brick of beeswax. I should mention that I waxed them after oiling them. But sounds like you have already done that. The boards need the moisture, or they will become crap very soon. I use whatever stable oil we had on hand at the time for the floors, usually adding some lemon or orange type oils to it so that there would be no rot in the wood. Guest guest
Hey What fun! Most of the commercial waxes are solvent extracted and still stinky... When my husband and I built our yurt that we used to live in- we bought this snazzy all natural stuff called livos to finish our floors with - it was great but expensive... so for the other surfaces we experimented... Tung oil is great- and we added orange and rosemary oils to thin it and add to the protective qualities. I have wood floors in our new(old) house and will soon be experimenting with this very thing... the livos stuff was linseed, beeswax rosemary and orange oil and some minerals for hardening... I will most likely do some tung oil(although it stinks a bit- at least it isnt chemical..) Some other oil(even olive), beeswax, orange and rosemary eos- these floors are maple and the oil on them makes them almost iridescent! I was thinking of adding some other butter, too... Have fun! Guest guest
Hi Chris I make furniture polish with beeswax and turpentine (the proper stuff, not the stuff you can get to clean paint brushes)Sometimes I add carnuba to it because it hardens it. Sometimes I also add essential oils. Haven't got any polish at present, but when I have I'll send you a tin - might make floors a bit slippy! - broken bones and all that. Regards Ann - Scotland - envious of all those who are now buying 2 for 1 and then after tomorrow buying in the sale but only having to pay minimal postage (and no customs duties!) Sose, Do you mean just take a block of beeswax and after the floor is mopped and oiled give the floor a good rub down with the wax block? And when you say waxed .. you mean with the beeswax, right? Just making sure - I'm a bit slow today Thanks! Happy New Year! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
My grandfather (1883-1972) was a skilled wood craftsman and also made his own finishing wax by mixing beeswax, turpentine, plus linseed oil. The oil was heated in a double boiler and the beeswax was shaved into the hot oil to melt it. He then removed it from the heat and added the turpentine. Sure wish I knew the ratios! He applied 3 coats to everything...this made the furniture surfaces waterproof, and they held a beautiful satin sheen for many years without additional maintenance. Guest guest
Tung oil does give a good finish, I just hate using it! It gets all sticky all over your fingers/gloves/whatever you are using. Guest guest
Chris: Have you ever tried Murphy's soap? I use it all the time. You can get it in a diluted form in a spray bottle or the pure soap. I used the diluted on an antique maple desk I have that is close to the bathroom and when I use hair spray, it drifts. Took it right off. The pure soap I use in my scrub water for the kitchen and also for tough stains on my cloths. Especially coffee (cappuccino). The stains come right out. Just dampen the stain and put some of the soap on it. Works wonders. Don't know if this would work for hardwood floors but may be worth a try. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!
