Tacky glue Mix in bowl and stir until well blended. Work mixture in hands for three minutes to form a ball. If it is too dry, add applesauce, if too wet, add more cinnamon. Knead ball on cinnamon-sprinkled surface until it holds togehter well. I roll this out and use cookie cutters for the shapes. I also use a drinking straw to cut a hanging hole. These can be air dried for 24 to 48 hours. Turn several times. They can also be baked in a slow oven. Recipe 2: 1 lb. powdered cinnamon 3/4 c. applesauce 1/8 c. orris root powder (optional) 1/8 oz. apple fragrance (optional) Add scent to the orris root and mix well. Combine with the cinnamon powder and add the applesauce. Add a tiny bit of apple cider if it's too dry, or more cinnamon if too wet. Roll out no thinner than 1/4 " and cut out shapes. Use a straw to cut a hole at the top if making a hanging ornament. Dry in a dehydrator or air-dry. Let dry thoroughly and sand the rough edges with a fingernail file and paint with fabric paints. Recipe 3: 1-4 oz. can of cinnamon 1 T. cloves 1 T. nutmeg 3/4 cup applesauce 2 T. white glue Mix dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients Mix thoroughly. Roll out and cut shapes. Mix in applesauce 1/4 cup at a time until you get a stiff but somewhat sticky dough. Grease a cookie sheet with a spray, and grease your hands. pat out the dough onto a greased surface (I use a corian cutting board) and cut out the " cookies " with cookie cutters- bear shapes and gingerbread man shapes look good with the brown dough- and add " faces " with whole cloves. Carefully put the cookies onto a cookie sheet, poke a hole in the top with a straw (for the hanger) and bake at 300 degrees F until they are nice and hard- 15 minutes at least, depending how thick the dough it, keep checking until they are no longer sticky. Let cool, and tie a ribbon through the hole to hang them by. ~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.kidsdomain.com/craft/dough2.html Cinnamon Dough Ornaments Make plenty of these ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree, a door wreath, and in kitchen windows. You can create cinnamon decorations for any occasion by just changing cookie cutters. Children will need supervision with measuring. This project is rated EASY to do. What You Need 1 1/2 cups ground cinnamon 1 cup applesauce 1/4 cup white school glue (like Elmer's) Bowl Plastic food wrap Rolling pin Wax paper Cookie cutters or a knife Ribbon or yarn for hanging Straw How To Make It Mix cinnamon, applesauce, and glue together in a bowl. The dough should be as thick as cookie dough. Add a bit of water if the dough is too stiff. Remove from bowl and knead. Put it back in the bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let sit for at least a half hour. Remove the dough, knead again to make sure it's smooth. Flatten/roll the dough between waxed paper until it's between 1/4 " thick and 1/8 " thick. Cut out desired shapes, use a straw to punch a hole for the ribbon to hang. The circle of dough will pull out with the straw. Gently place the shapes on a piece of clean wax paper. They will take 3-5 days to dry, and you will need to turn them over a couple of times a day for them to dry evenly and flat. Don't be surprised to see that the ornaments get smaller during the drying process. Keep this in mind when you pick out the cookie cutters for your designs. You will also notice that if you do not turn the ornaments over often enough while they are drying, the edges of the ornaments will curl. When dry, thread a piece of ribbon or yarn through the hole to hang. SHAPE IDEAS: Tree, Apple, House (gingerbread), Bell, Heart, Goose, Gingerbread Man, Star... Optional Painting ideas - use acrylic paints or fabric paints to paint details, like white 'frosting' on a gingerbread man or gingerbread house, or eyes on a goose.
