Guest guest
I thought it might be fun if everyone gave an idea of how to recycle by re-using (in a crafty way) any common household trash item(s) ...... like turning dryer sheets into paper .... or mayonnaise jars into herb storage containers (like Marilyn mentioned), or turning toilet paper centers into caterpillars for the kids with pipe cleaners .... etc. .... *Smile* Chris (list mom) Giving thanks by giving a darn Only 35 Days Left 'Till Christmas! Guest guest
Not crafty but very useful! One thing I do is to recycle loo roll centres and kitchen roll centres for sowing seeds. I stand however many will fit in an icecream tub and fill them with soil/compost then sow one/two seed in each. Then when they are ready for planting out, they can go out in their container (which will disintegrate) without damaging the roots. This is particularly good for beans, peas, sunflowers etc, especially up here because our growing season is not as long as it is in the south of England Still in the garden - large water or pop bottles with their bottoms cut off make good mini greenhouses to keep slugs etc away from young plants. Guest guest
YOu can use old baby bottles for nonspill paint dispenser for kids. Just cut the nipple hole a little bigger (big enouph for there paintbrush), fill bottle about half full of paint, flip nipple upside down and screw the screw piece back on..lol My freind taught med this and with 3 kids painting i love it. If you make the hole real close to the paint brush size it sqweegies off the excess so depends on how much paint ya want on the brush. I never used the bottles they were just collecting dust LOL. Hope the description is good enouph lol i'm going on no coffee and no sleep lol.. hugss Sarah and the three little sickies :-) >Christine Ziegler <chrisziggy1 > > > Recyling Crafts >Wed, 21 Nov 2001 18:20:16 -0700 > >I thought it might be fun if everyone gave an idea of how to recycle by >re-using (in a crafty way) any common household trash item(s) ...... > like turning dryer sheets into paper .... or mayonnaise jars into herb >storage containers (like Marilyn mentioned), or turning toilet paper >centers into caterpillars for the kids with pipe cleaners .... etc. .... > >*Smile* >Chris (list mom) >Giving thanks by giving a darn > >Only 35 Days Left 'Till Christmas! >Great Gift Baskets For The Holidays! >http://www.alittleolfactory.com > > > >My Pictures of Aromatic Plants and Exotic Places In Turkey >http://members.home.net/chrisziggy1/triptoturkey.html > >
Guest guest
I got one....we have used frozen oj containers and cookie dough tubes for candles and soap molds. All you do it pour it then tear off when it has set. Helaine
Guest guest
I use any aluminum tin as a mold for extra melted wax. I also use muffin tins & candy molds to melt and " recycle " broken crayons into new crayons. Put the broken ones in the tin and melt slowly in the oven. Or melt them in a double boiler and cool off until a skim starts to form on the top and pour into candy molds. -- " Sarah Ihle " <Sihle1 Thu, 22 Nov 2001 13:15:38 +0000 Re: Recyling Crafts YOu can use old baby bottles for nonspill paint dispenser for kids. Guest guest
You people are *so* handy! I've picked up lots of great ideas from this thread. The only recycling thing I'm doing so far is saving all my glass jars from coffee, mayonnaise, etc. I haven't used any of them yet, but I'm sure I will as I get deeper into this stuff. Right now I'm contemplating homemade gifts for Christmas and thinking about trying my hand at a first batch of soap. It's scarey, though. Maybe after the holidays. :-) -- Sandy
Guest guest
We use t paper and p towel rolls as cheap dog toys. I know that's minor but we gave up on trying to buy soemthign to amuse this creature; squeaky toys scare her(I think she thinks they are babies or somethign and she's hurting it altho she has no problem eating squeaking mice), toys that dont' make noise she thinks are babies and goes into anxiety attacks trying to figure out what to do with them, we have to take them from her and put them away 'safe' then she calms down. Bones get buried, no matter what. Plastic pop bottles with the tops(including the plstic rings that come off them) and labels cut off are good until they are flat and dont' make any more noise or bounce off the floor when she drops it in order to chase it. A paper plate is good for 3/4 hour til she eats every tiny little bit of it chewing it like gum. Have to limit her on that one, and keep thae trash can covered, paper is the only thing she will haul out if you dont' watch her. Water bottles can be reused for a long time before they get too wrinkled and might leak. Easily cleaned using a light bleach rinse last. We hate city water(pool water) and bring our own from home everywhere we go. If we run out we buy water that has been processed with reverse osmosis and then save the bottle. There are many cheap brands. Wouldnt touch spring water, it could be anything. just a couple thoughts. -Ilene > > I thought it might be fun if everyone gave an idea of how to recycle > by
Guest guest
Hiya, Ok.. recycling " queen " here.. ROFLMAO! Mayo jars, and almost any glass jars, honey... etc's.... (cept pickle ones, can never get that vinegar smell outta them, any ideas?) are always re-used. Herb storage, potpourri's to be aged in.. stuff like that. Smaller glass jars such as the honey ones or jelly jars even, are great for storing and aging incense - loose - cap tightly and store in cool place out of the light........ Plastic containers are good for odds and ends that we seem to accumulate and don't really know how! They're also good for shea butter and co-coa butter and things of that sort - not too long though...........store those out of the light as well, cool, dark place. Left-over's of yarn.. keep em! Make good ties for little gifts or if you have kitties, try this one - take the yarn and wrap around your hand,,,,,,,,, keep wrapping till you have a bunch. Cut. Have a maybe 6 " piece on hand - tie in the middle, (it'll look like a bunch of loops with a tie in the center) - cut loops, roll it in catnip if you'd like to give the kitties a treat. Mine love the things! ANY, and I mean *any* cellophane that you have from say... even herbal tea boxes, save it if you have cats - put a bottle cap inside it and tie up with yarn or string...........the cellophane sounds to them (I think<?>) like a bug and they go nuts over it! If you leave a longer string on the funny-looking thing, walk around the house, they'll just run around after you! Tires us all out We buy bottled water here since Florida's water, at least in this town ummm.. doesn't taste good - ok, that's putting it mildly! When the smaller bottles are empty, there's the bottle cap thingy, for one, and then take the bottle itself and cut the top and bottom off and you have a seed starter - keeps the wild bunnies and things from eating your new plants that are coming up. Plant a seed right in the ground, lightly push the cut bottle around it. Helps keep the seedling healthy and also keeps moisture inside the bottle (condensation), and the animals won't eat the new plants. When the plants get large enough, just gently pull out the bottle. Leftover Christmas curling ribbon? Small pieces? Maybe a foot or less on the darned roll.. keep em! When you want to tie up a small plant in your garden that's not going the right way - make it purty! ROFL Use the leftover ribbon and curl it! It's colorful and works. (you should've seen our tomato ties this year! lol) Besides, that's another thing that goes on sale many times right before the holidays at about 25 cents a pack......... Don't forget to boil and re-use those colored bottles that your eo's come in! Why buy new ones when the old ones are good if you sterilize them. Gift bags. Christmas or any occasion - we wrap pretty much NOTHING here anymore! During the year, look out for those dollar sales or half-price sales on satin ribbon and material, or.. if you're sewing something anyways, save what's left, there's always something! - choose different themes or just plain colors. Cut into squares, rectangles or box shapes - turn the top down and sew it under, then just sew around the rest, leaving the top that's been sewed first open. Take a piece of ribbon and sew near the top - bingo - you have the wrapping and the ribbon! Stick the gift in and tie! Easy and reusable, cept don't let your Aunt take them home like I did! Want a cheap and hilarious Christmas stocking? Buy, OFF-season, a pair of bright red children's tights, you can usually pick them up for no more than a dollar. Next Christmas, make someone " special-who-has-a-sense-of-humor " a different gift.......fill those tights! (Heck, it's less than a gift basket and lots of fun too!) After carefully filling... tie the top together and 'sit' the filled tights down in a chair! Reactions alone are worth it And yes, one leg is crossed and one leg " always " ends up longer than the other one! We did this for YEARS for our Aunt and she always gave the tights back for the year after - had a ball with those! If you do any beadwork at all, those old, ugly and worn out ice cube trays make wonderful sorters for the beads you're using. (they don't even look ugly anymore!) Same goes for the smaller or rectangle worn out-lost-the-top-to tupperware/rubbermaid containers. Great for soap making or lotion bars which you'll have to cut in either case. Ever made an eggshell vase? Yup, you can recycle eggshells! ROFL Take a cheap vase, plain one, any size. Plain old school glue. Watered down about half. A little glitter. Clean eggshells, which isn't as hard as it sounds - soak em in a bowl of warm water and soap - dump em out on a paper towel and let dry. Crunch them up. Take the water and glue and paint it all over the vase. Roll it in the eggshells - sprinkle glitter on. It really " is " pretty. If the top of the vase isn't too wide, put a cork in it and fill with bathsalts ...............or those fizzies<?> Ok, want more or should I just shutup??? <grinz> Hugs, Marilyn Christine Ziegler wrote: > I thought it might be fun if everyone gave an idea of how to recycle by > re-using (in a crafty way) any common household trash item(s) ...... > like turning dryer sheets into paper .... or mayonnaise jars into herb > storage containers (like Marilyn mentioned), or turning toilet paper > centers into caterpillars for the kids with pipe cleaners .... etc. .... > > *Smile* > Chris (list mom) > Giving thanks by giving a darn > > Only 35 Days Left 'Till Christmas! > Great Gift Baskets For The Holidays! > http://www.alittleolfactory.com > > > My Pictures of Aromatic Plants and Exotic Places In Turkey > http://members.home.net/chrisziggy1/triptoturkey.html > >

Guest guest
Very useful...That would be especially useful for starting seeds with a taproot, corn comes to mind. Never thought of that. Our growing season is the pits and in recent years it has gotten even more varied. You never know what to epect tho it is going back to the ice ages again so I will really get soem mileage outof this one. Poor puppy will be getting less toys from now on. -Ilene > > Not crafty but very useful! > One thing I do is to recycle loo roll centres and kitchen roll centres > for sowing seeds. > I stand however many will fit in an icecream tub and fill them with > soil/compost then sow one/two seed in each.
