Guest guest
Hi Carol, Store them in a glass jar, not plastic, <hint, save all those mayo jars, lol>, then make sure they're not in the sun, cool and dry are best, I have cupboards for mine and tons of jars! (but I'm still saving the mayonnaise jars!!!!!!!!!) Good luck! Happy Thanksgiving Hugs, Marilyn doggone wrote: > I have a question????? What is the correct way to keep dried > herbs? Guest guest
Hi Carol, The only time you need to be storing herbs in the freezer is when you are freezing and storing them in water while fresh (like making little ice cubes of fresh basil to have pesto in February). *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com .. Guest guest
Great to hear it, my freezer was getting too full. I was always afraid to just put the herbs in the cupboard. Figured they would get stale and lose all that great flavor. How long can herbs be stored? Sorry about all the questions. Guest guest
Hi Carol, As long as the cupboard's not one above or next to the stove.(heat). <grin> they'll store for quite a long time, not that we ever seem to " have " them that long!!!!!!!!! I bet you'll end up using them before they even " think " about losing flavor!!!!!!! I keep my freezer<s> full too! I think it makes me feel secure or something? Guest guest
Thanks for all the information. I have a cupboard in the mud room, stays nice in cool in there, so that is where the bulk of them are going to. I'm tired of the grocery store herbs, so I am expanding my fresh dried herb collection. Thanks again..... When I was a teenager and young adult (was on my own since 15) I went without a decent meal, or even a meal, quite often. Think that's why my cupboards, etc are always full. I'm ready for anything now. Carol , Marilyn Nicholson <menicholson7@e...> wrote: > Hi Carol, I keep my freezer<s> full too! Guest guest
Carol It depends what herb it is- roots and barks last longer- sometimes up to a few years...leaves last UP TO a year- some, like lemon balm, lose their aromatic properties as soon a they are dry- better to use it fresh. When your herbs are too old for tea- they make great compost! Remember, too, when brewing your infusion, to *cover it*- this keeps the aromatic constituents from floating away in the steam! Happy herbing... Michelle - Carol <doggone Wednesday, November 21, 2001 8:49 PM Re: Dried Herbs > Great to hear it, my freezer was getting too full. Guest guest
Funny, I was not on my own but our family had little to nothing it seemed. The highlight of my day was the free lunch in the cafeteria at school, perhaps that is why I feel impelled to keep stocked up. It is handy tho. I drive DH nuts soemtimes tho -Ilene Carol wrote: > When I was a teenager and young adult (was on my own since 15) I went > without a decent meal, or even a meal, quite often. Guest guest
Don't know if it affects quality or anythign but I store my home dried things in the deep freeze for 2-3 weeks right after drying them to kill anything that might decide to hatch if it hitchhiked into the house on the leabes or whatever. Then I take them out and still jarred, store in a cool dry place. -Ilene > The only time you need to be storing herbs in the freezer is when you > are freezing and storing them in water while fresh (like making little > > ice cubes of fresh basil to have pesto in February). >
