Guest guest
Hey Ilene, Maybe it has something to do with the Scots, Irish and Welsh not really volunteering to be members of the United Kingdom methinks .. sorta like most of the American Indians didn't really wanna become citizens of the United States of America .. ;-p My family name is Owen on my father's side and Jones on my mother's. If you rip out all the Owens and Joneses from a phone book in Wales, you'll have too little paper left to line a bird cage. ;-9 Many of my British English friends STILL think most of the Scottish folks are happy to be members of the United Kingdom .. but many of my Scottish friends tell me otherwise. Methinks it might be sorta like us American Suth'ran folks .. we can see today that America being united is good and we're proud to be a part of the whole scene .. but deep down in our heart of hearts, we still hold a bit of remorse and anger for some of the things that went down in the War of Secession .. and even moreso, for that BLACK period of American history called Reconstruction. Took the US Army 25 years to regain the reputation they lost during Reconstruction and the worst part is that it was forced on them - wasn't a job they relished because soldiers don't like to play pawns for crooked pork-barrel politicans. That period of history is the REAL beginning of racial discrimination in the Suth'ran USA .. social scientists understand that but few others do. We can honestly say that institutional racism began as a result of the policies of the crooked congresses that followed each other through and after the War of Succession - one of the few things historians all agree on. The upside to that was that it was later recognized and a number of laws were enacted to ensure no repeats .. like the Possa Comitatus Act and the creation of the Defense Department as a stopgap between congressional policies and military actions. If not for the Indian campaigns, it would have taken the US Army 50 or more years to be forgiven .. and they know that. Interesting piece of history that Reconstruction period - and one most folks know nothing of. Y'all keep smiling, Butch http://www.AV-AT.com PS: Some of the finest officers in the Confederate Army were Irish and Scottish .. that's simply because they settled in the South, as did the Germans, whereas most of the English folks settled in the North. > " Ann - Scotland (but not Scottish!!!) " > Such an interesting thing, what is it about being English or Scottish? > My maiden name sounded like it originated from Scotland, someone asked > me once, I didn't know and so asked my Dad. He looked insulted and said > " No it is English, not Scot! " No real explanation just a horrified look > and that was the end of the conversation. Like I had asked him if we > sacrificed babies or somethign. What is it that engenders such a thing? > -Ilene
