They said those products would not be affected by the scanning. Helaine
Guest guest
Hi everyone, Since there is to be a closing of yet more post offices for testing.. 30 or so more, I think and this " will " affect anyone using the mail service - how can it not? Shipping will be slowing down.........at best--or shipping rates will be going up as those who are used to using the US mail system will try either UPS or FEDEX, think about this - how is this going to affect the many cottage industry's on the web? Not good, I'd say.........But, that's not all, as those who ship via the US Postal Service will still probably continue to do so, even though we're in the midst of the normally busiest and for some, the season which keeps them in business (the holiday) season's mailings, in keeping with the lower cost of shipping for their small businesses.....think about this: The US Postal Service Scanners: My question to any or all of you is this: Since these new postal scanners which are being installed to keep up or to " help " with our nation's security, and we DO need it, that I have no dispute of --- it's this and it's just a question. The scanners will act as a demagnitizer, you will not be able to mail anything like film.. as it will erase it - same goes for computer disks, etc. Ok.. taking it a step farther, essential oils or essential oil products that we mail out daily with their exact and delicate components - How will this affect them? Or will it? To guess I'd have to say, it may and could but I really don't know, anyone else's opinion or hopefully information on this would be really appreciated as this affects many of us. Thanks, Hugs, Marilyn
Guest guest
If you are talking about the irradiation machines that are going to be put into place to disinfect the mail, then I would be concerned. Radiation can cause the elements in a chemical compound to deteriorate or change into other elements. And from what I have heard, the Gamma radiation dosage is quite high, it would kill a human if you were exposed to it. If the components of the oil are sensitive to radiation, then this may end up harming your essential oils. I would think that the USPS would have some exceptions to the irradiation. After all, people even send live animals/plants (chicks, etc) through the mail which would not survive exposure to Gamma radiation. If you want more technical info on radiation and how it affects chemical compounds, let me know, and I'll dig out my old text books. Hope this helps, Michele -- ------ Who Wills, Can. Guest guest
Hi Michele, Helaine, Deonia, all........ I heard the same as you did, Michele - and so yes, I am concerned. Though Helaine has already e-mailed them and they said no it won't.. but somehow here, I can't see how. I do realize that there are to be exceptions (or one would think there would be, as to live animals and such), but I wouldn't be too sure that eo's or products made from them would be part of those exceptions as little bottles and/or jars can be considered to be something that needs to be irradiated. Especially now that the country is going on Highest Alert for at least the coming week per the FBI as we've received yet another " viable " threat and so far, the threats are pretty accurate........<sigh> --- and you're right in that depending on the product and what's in it would also depend on if it's components are changed. I'd almost like to check with some of the very large health web-sites (webrx.com came to mind till I found out they're going out of business............) to find out what plans they have or IF they've made plans to change their shipping to either UPS or FEDEX. I can dig out textbooks as well, but knowing from my husband working in a nuclear facility (several years ago, and I'm glad he's not there now!), radiation does change things.. a LOT, as far as compostion, etc. Thanks Michele and Helaine, for your quick responses and seems like you're nite owls like me Mark and I were talking about it tonight and wondering ...........and I thought I'd e-mail the list and see if anyone else was......also wondering if anyone was planning on using another form of sending out products which would be more costly and ultimately get passed on to the customers.. Hugs and thanks to both of you....... Marilyn
