Used opaque Rubbermaid bin w/lid. Drilled LARGE holes for air circ. (about 1 1/2 inches) along the sides. Worked great. Always lots of worms. The originals were harvested from beneath the autumn leaves on the ground near the compost heap. Gail Rice
Guest guest
i am using an old Rubbermaid type toy box 4 x 2 x 2.......lined with a plastic tarp, with holes punched in it for water drainage........the worms i got at walmart for $1.25, maybe 4 packs.......they reproduce when they are happy and fed! hey and if i'm going fishing, i'll scoop up a bowl of them, i figure if i'm feeding them, i can fish with them!!.....used to throw them in the chicken coop from time to time........but my girls got so spoiled, they stopped eating the striped worms......dunno about that *scratching my head* good luck! larrae - " Kathleen Petrides " <petrides5 of them. > > Was dying to try the worm bins, but they were charging a fortune for the > tiger worms(not to mention the bins)....so am composting until the next > move. >
Guest guest
i do that.........save the worms.....it's so sad to see them all dried up on the sidewalk........i wish the birds would at least get them prior to the " fry " .......lol a worm bin is a " mini " compost pile for woirms. in a nutshell you create or buy a " home " .......line it with shredded paper, add worms, then periodically add leaves, leftovers, egg shells, coffee grounds, you know, kitchen stuff, and continually add paper products over the top. after a time, you'll just have nice dirt and lots-o worms. you sort them and start again. you use tiger worms, not red worms.....you can get them at any tackle shop. i had some links before my last crash last month.......i'll see if i can find them. a great book is " worms eat my garbage " . i really like it more than the kids <9 & 10 & 17>, but it's a good cover =). Having kids means I can watch cartoons and play with chalk and hotwheel cars and nobody gives me a hard time. If the kids are in the same room =) i'll go look for the two very good links.......brb. larrae - " chrisziggy " <chrisziggy1 > Hi Larrae > > What is a worm bin? > > I have a compost pile that we made out of chicken wire and I dump red > worms in it anually I love to get mail order bugs! Guest guest
Yep, I'm a worm saver too. Poor things. Put them in my tiny garden and save them for FISHING! Do I hear a " Poor worms? " Don't bother. I've been saving worms for 3 years now, haven't dug a single one up yet! I've a compost heap full of all sorts of bugs. WHICH I don't bother. I figure, they can do THEIR thing and I'll reap the benefits. I'm not the most consistant composter (this year for example, I've been dismal), but I'm a HUGE believer and surporter of them. Was dying to try the worm bins, but they were charging a fortune for the tiger worms(not to mention the bins)....so am composting until the next move. Then I'm going to try a bee hive. WHICH, by the way, my mother thinks is a TOTALLY stupid idea for someone allergic to bees, and s'posed to carry an epi-pen (WHICH, I totally ignore, by the way) Cheers!
