5% Dilution?

One of the items in the Rose Otto Gift Basket that I won in Chris' auction

was a little bottle of the oil in a 5% dilution in jojoba oil.

Novice that I am, I'm not sure how this is supposed to be used. The only

thing I can think of offhand is pouring it into a bath as a bath oil,

dabbing some on my body as a perfume, or putting a few drops in the bowl of

water on my ceramic diffuser.

I'm assuming it isn't to be used in recipes as a replacement for rose

otto. For example... if a recipe calls for 2 drops of rose otto, I

couldn't use 2 drops of this dilution instead... because it would be too

light and it wouldn't produce the same results. Am I right about that?

I'm also thinking (thinking out loud here, so bear with me) it would be

good to add to other blends (i.e. citrusy blends) to round of the

scent. Am I right about that?

I just want to make sure that I use this in the right way. I don't want to

waste a drop!

To do any of that ... dilute it further :) Even at 5%, as you can tell

... it is STRONG stuff!

Actually before I use Rose Otto, Jasmine, Neroli, Helichrysum, or

usually even Blue Chamomile in recipes I will dilute it

to about 5 or 10% and then use that. For the most part 2 drops of pure,

uncut, Rose Otto in most blended recipe will overwhelm it! VERY rarely

do I use Rose Otto full stregnth ... only when making HUGE batches of of

my rose scented bath products (and a few drops go a LOOONG way).

Rose blends VERY well with lemony scents .. such as Melissa :)

There are no words to describe how much I'm enjoying this! A quick

example; After using the bar of soap the first time, I noticed it was

getting smaller awfully fast. It seems that my father, 2 *adult* children,

and my grandson were all using it... even though there were 2 other bars of

soap open in the bathroom. Needless to say, I took my rose soap out of the

bathroom and I keep it in my underwear drawer. Sorry, family... this one's

only for me!! And it makes my underwear smell so nice!!

I'm gonna use the fizzy bath stuff today. I usually take showers, but I am

learning to really enjoy pampering baths. :-)

I'm purposely leaving both my questions and your answers below, as they can

probably help other newbies here.

Questions about the use of a 5% dilution of rose otto:

This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks Chris! Now I

have to pull out my calculator and figure out how to cut it down to a 2%

dilution in 1 oz. of jojoba.... or maybe 2 ounces. I'll see what I can

figure out. I just got home from school (college at 49 years old ain't fun

<g>) and my brain is kinda fizzled out. Maybe I should wait until tomorrow

to work this out.

OK. Gotcha. I now understand about diluting it for scent. I'm not (yet)

making toiletries, but what about using it in blends for stuff like

menstrual cramps, depression, etc. If the recipe calls for X dropsof otto,

shouldn't I use X drop of the pure otto rather than the dilution?

Btw, I've been using a facial moisturizer that I made with shea butter,

cocoa butter, and lavender. Today I'm going to melt it down, dilute the 5%

down to 2% (once I figure out how), and add some to the moisturizer.

So *now* you mention another one of those that I haven't been able to

purchase yet. Hmmm... maybe after the jasmine and neroli? :-)

I certainly won't... especially with your help, and that of the other

knowledgeable and helpful folks on this list!!
