Herbal Perservative

MM Everyone,

Can anyone tell me a good herbal perservative I can add to my face

toner and creams so they won't have to stay in the frig. and I can

keep on my shelf. It is getting a little cold to put on my face. But

my skin is so dry I need my herbs, and I didn't know what I could add

that wouldn't hurt my face. I am even starting to sag a little

around the mouth, so if anyone has a good herb for that, I would

appreciate the info.

That is a bit tricky. If its just for you, and not for sale, and you

make small batches at a time, grapefruit seed extract does work (but NOT

for commercial sale products!!!). Also if you are adding Essential Oils

to your creams they can have a limited amount of an anti-bacterial

preservative nature to them.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but I'll add it anyway .. never

use fingers to scoop the cream out of the container .. always use a

clean spoon or spatula, and even if not in the fridge, keep it in a cool

place.

Ooh, I hear you about the cold - cold cream ;)

I hear Rose Otto and Rosa damascena hydrosol is absolutely wonderful in

creams and toners for dry and maturing skin. I'm partial to the Turkish

variety myself ;)

My 2¢ worth, which isn't worth even THAT!

Jojoba helps, as does Vitamin E. Won't keep it forever, but I've yet to have

one go bad.

Cheers!

Hi nighengale,

I don't know if this will help or not, but I make all our perfumes/colognes and

such and what I use if jojoba oil - the stuf lasts forever or

so it seems.. maybe a little of that? Since it's actually a liquid wax, maybe

that'll do the trick? just a thought........

Hugs and luck,

Nightengale,

I'll have to second that on the Rose Otto and Rosa damascena hydrosol in creams , and the partiallity to the Turkish variety too!

I made a great cream using the Rose hydrosol as the water element, with Rose Otto, Rosewood, and Tea Tree for myself and some of my friends that have psoriasis and eczema and it has helped greatly, especially with the itching. I will never uses just plain water again in any of my creams. Deonia

Nightengale,

I'm sure there are plenty of places to order turkish rose, hydrosol or the

oil but my vote goes to our list mom's site.

I happen to know her source is the best ! (it's mine also).

Check it out if you haven't.

Know that feeling 21 years ago. I never thought I

would ever have my daughter. In fact my husband and I

were rushing to the hospital about the 3 time and a

police car hit us. Then the contractions stopped. You

would have thought I would have had her that night.

She was stubbborn then and still is now.

Hi Chris, as always you help is great!

I am giving some to my friends, so what is the

commerical use perservative. I don't want to do

anything that would hurt them. They are my testers. So

maybe after my daughter wedding and my son senior year

(the cost is unbearable) I may dab into commerical. I

see myself in a little shop filled with fresh herbs,

my bottled mixtures, something like Practical Magic

movie. And where I can be happy the rest of my life.

No more insults at work, being unhappy, and worried

about the kids. They will then have there own health

ins. and I can get on my husband's. His isn't that

good, but ok for me and him. Well that's my dream,

maybe one day!!?

I have the same dream:) I'm busting my butt making mine happen now. I

think it is wonderful. Sure I work 12+ hours a day, but it is stuff I

love doing, every minute of it. Okay so I'm not absolutely in love with

dealing with customers who got broken bottles, but usually it isn't so

bad:)

MM Deonia,

That sounds great! Where did you find the Rose EO and

Our list mom has the best(imo) rose otto at a great price on her website...

www.alittleolfactory.com

When I make creams I use aloe, distilled water and rose hydrosol as the

liquid and infused calendula, shea butter, jojoba and calophyllum for the

oil. I also add eo's according to the type of skin Im making it for. I do

not use a preservative and keep it in the fridge. I have never had a problem

with rancidity, etc...jojoba has a 100 year shelf life and I believe this

helps keep it stable.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this one .... unfortunately when

making any kind of commercial product like creams and lotions you have

to use a preservative like Germaban II .. it is synthetic .... but an

FDA " proven safe " synthetic preservative in a commercial product is a

lot safer for you and your customer (who chances are will NOT follow all

guidelines to keep the product as germ free as possible as long as

possible) than an unapproved, " not proven safe " natural preservative

that may work, or work only but for a short time or not even work at all.

CYA - folks like to sue!!!

I need to add that I only make cream for my self, family and clients who I

know well and will keep it refrigerated. There are commercial creams out

there. There are commercial without synthetic preservatives in them- Weleda,

Geremy Rose, Dr Hauschka- to name a few- they are not cottage industries and

make their stuff in labs...
