Not At/ Question re: food prep

Ok It is my fault I turned the news on. Ha!

I must be more careful.

 

The reporter was talking about food prep in case

terrorist went after our food supply. He seemed to feel

fresh vegetables would be a problem area. Only 1% of

produce inspected. Migrant works doing the labor etc.

 

The reporters suggestion cook foods thoroughly etc.

 

Ok, how would y'all wash lettuce and vegetables

that you would not normally cook, in order to feel

secure enough to eat them? Oh I realize ideally we

would only eat what we grew but then there is reality life.

Yes, it is sort of AT:) Wash them with some citrus eo in the wash water.

The citric acid will not only remove dirt and other things, but most of

them will also remove or partially destroy bacteria.

 

You know that Fit wash stuff? That is basically baking soda, water, and

orange oil (from the peel). I just use whatever citrus eo I have on

hand. Just a drop or two to a bowl of wash water, stir, then swish

veggies in it. You can add more if you want the flavor of the eo in the

food. Sometimes, if I am doing a lot of veggies, then I add like a

teaspoon or less of baking soda.

This is when going to your local farmer and eating things in season and not

relying on stuff from california is a good idea. We will be eating lots of

squash and potatoes here in vermont this winter- were getting all the " last

greens " now- then we will be sprouting.

Hi Michelle,

 

How right you are.. we've grown some things here in Florida, and it seems we'll

have another growing season yet :) Sure differerent from where

we were (Connecticut)-- that was one small growing season if it didn't rain too

much - last 4 years or so it did............:( Vermont? We used

to up there a lot, Stowe? (in the summer since it's a very beautiful time to go

and besides, we don't ski!) We do have a farmer's market here

every Friday - all year, which is good too. I already have the freezer pretty

stocked up with all kinds of good things, made the spagetti

sauce, marinara... etc's... have veggie's frozen since .. well, you never know,

and I guess it's just plain old security to know you have

things already. :)

Janet, i'd prabably use a solution of "food grade"Hydrogen Peroxide but that is not something that's easy for most people to get. I'll try and think of something more user friendly and let you know.Deonia
