Guest guest
Hiya Chris, Yea.. it's called relax???? Other than that.. dim lights... lie down, slightly elevated........ cold pack on shoulder/neck area... 7-10 minutes on... every couple hours, 3x - sounds like you need to minimize the swelling. Two days is a looooooooooong time to wait for that massage though... NOT good! Hope this helps............. Guest guest
Hi Chris, Try either the linalool oregano or the roman chamomile (I'm sure you've got both of those there from Butch's collection !!) ... or better still - blend them 2:1, (dilute to your preference ... ) & put a few drops on & around the knot. The hold your hand (or someone else's hand - Little People's hands are really good for this - even as young as Sean is !) over the knot to warm the area. Try very gently stretching your neck - think ear to shoulder & stretch just till you can feel the pull. Hope you're all loosened up soon! Okay, I do that and end up watching the news, and see stories about a 7 month old who now has Anthrax and Senator Daschell's Office zapped too (I used to talk to his personal secretary daily, and met him too several times at one of my last jobs) and that REALLY relaxes me (oh yeah) ... then I put on HBO, 7 channels of it, nothing is on, and I remember how much that crap costs me per month - sheesh, can't a gal get a break *LOL* cold pack on shoulder/neck area... 7-10 minutes > on... every couple hours, 3x - sounds like you need to minimize the swelling. Oooh, Thanks for the idea! I make a Turkish Rose Otto Champagne Fizzy Bath which contains both epsom salts and Rose Otto .. I can add some Rose hydrosol to the water and a little more Epsom salts if need be .... too bad my tub is small and I have my choice of soaking my upper OR lower body (not both though).... *LOL* I shall try that bath anyway ... I soaked in a 2 person size tub full of Rose Hydrosol in Turkey and it felt REALLY great then .. how could one not feel great in a tub full of rose hydrosol? *Smile* Chris (list mom) Happy Halloween - Made With Organic Pumpkin New! I got the daughter to help me with her Mum's headache & it was really beautiful to see her face glow when I asked her. I can empathise with you, Chris - my man had a nasty fall a few weeks ago & from all the lifting him in & out of bed I managed to develop quite a nasty stiff neck myself. Then I had to wait 2 weeks till *he* was better so he could massage my neck & shoulders *lol* My antispasm blend got lots of use for a while ! > > > > > Blessings, > > Jane :-)) > > P.S. - Obligatory Stupid American Question Of The Day: Do you celebrate > Halloween in Australia? *chuckles* yeah sorta ;-) We don't do the trick & treat thing that you guys do, but more & more people have parties & stuff & dress up. Guest guest
Chris, I have that same neck muscle problem all the time, usually after sitting at the computer 'til all hours of the morning! The only thing that worked for me was putting heat and pressure on it. My neighbor saw me grabbing my neck one day and told me to sit down. He did exactly what my chiropracter used to do. Jammed his thumb right into the hardest, sorest spot and held it there until the sharp pain subsided then moved on until the whole area was loosened up. The next day it hurt more from the pressing than from the muscle being tight. When I felt the pain again, I would just feel for the tender areas and put the pressure on and soon it was all gone. Saved me a trip two hours away to my chiro. which would have been impossible to drive considering I couldn't turn my head to the right. Anyway, hope this helps. Oh you also could take a break from the computer :-) Dawn P.S. I received the Rose Otto basket - great products - can't wait to take a bath!! - " Chris Ziegler " <chrisziggy1 " " Tuesday, October 16, 2001 11:32 PM A Question For The Massage Therapists > I have a friend, who is a professional licensed massage therapist, coming > over on Thursday night to work on one heck of a knot I have in my > shoulder/neck It feels like I have a macadamia nut in my shoulder/neck it > is so knotted, anyone who touches it can feel it ): Of course the muscle > around it is really tight and tender too .... > Anything I can do for the next 2 days before she comes to make my massage > most effective (and get me well .. out of pain)? > > Thanks in advance for ANY ideas > > *Smile* > Chris (list mom) > > Happy Halloween - Made With Organic Pumpkin > New! Reason I suggested cold first.. to be followed by massage/heat later.. since Chris's friend can't get there till then.. is............if she's got swelling, the swollen part's pressing on muscles, tendons.. etc - getting that down first is good.........maybe the swelling is a large part of the pain.. -- the old RICE thingy rest-ice-compress-elevate thing......though heat does increase blood flow, which helps once the swelling's gone.. but not till.........dang, Chris, do it all! <grin> > > > > > Try very gently stretching your neck - think ear to shoulder & stretch just till > > you can feel the pull. > > > > Ooooh, just did, feeling that pull ... will go S-L-O-W-L-Y .. > > yes - slowly is the key ! & don't believe that 'no pain, no gain' bs ;-) just > very gentle stretches often - & do it both sides to keep your balance !! > -------------- No pain, no gain, IS bs.. pain in general is bs.. lol > > > > > > P.S. - Obligatory Stupid American Question Of The Day: Do you celebrate > > Halloween in Australia? > > *chuckles* yeah sorta ;-) We don't do the trick & treat thing that you guys do, > but more & more people have parties & stuff & dress up. Guest guest
Hiya Marilyn, yes, I chuckled when I saw that too ! I was going on my own experience here - if I've got stiff or knotted muscles, putting anything cold on it will make me tense up all the more ! Mind you, if the damage has gone into some kind of inflammation as well, then I'd probably welcome a coldpack !! I reckon the rose bath would help heaps too - it's that special feeling of being pampered that'll do it ;-) Blessings, Jane :-)) Marilyn Nicholson wrote: > > Hiyas, > > Oh gosh.. Guest guest
Hi there Lots of lovely answers to help you get through the next couple of days! Although the cool packs are good, so are warm ones - so after you've done the cold pack, or at another time, I'd massage that Marjoram you love gently into the area (perhaps with the R Chamomile or some Lavender) and then get a hot pack, hot water bottle (bet you call them something different) or a heated wheaty bag and put it over the area and just sit back for a while. You could even watch the TV while you did it! Hope it soon clears Regards Ann - Scotland
Guest guest
Hey Chris I would go with a heat pack- it is a trigger point and not an injury- these like heat to relax. Stretching is good- sounds like you work on a computer and carry a toddler around!!! :-) I prefer heat anyway- I treat injuries with moxa and not ice- which slows down the circulation-In the case of a " knot " what you want to do is stop the " continuous spasm " signal to the brain- this is done by holding the knot and working it until it is gone- usually best done by an MT but sometimes you can do it yourself. So- I would take St Johns Wort oil-and put roman cham, german cham, helichrysum and lavender- ginger is nice too- take a warm bath, stretch, if you can reach it with the other arm rub it a bit(this is when those massage canes come in handy!!) Relax in a position where you dont feel the pain for 20 minutes or longer- this is sometimes enough to release it- roll a towel up or put a cervical pillow under your neck. Ask God/dess for help! Feel better Michelle - Chris Ziegler <chrisziggy1 Tuesday, October 16, 2001 11:32 PM A Question For The Massage Therapists > I have a friend, who is a professional licensed massage therapist, coming > over on Thursday night to work on one heck of a knot I have in my > shoulder/neck It feels like I have a macadamia nut in my shoulder/neck it > is so knotted, anyone who touches it can feel it ): Of course the muscle > around it is really tight and tender too .... > Anything I can do for the next 2 days before she comes to make my massage > most effective (and get me well .. out of pain)? > > Thanks in advance for ANY ideas > > *Smile* > Chris (list mom) > > Happy Halloween - Made With Organic Pumpkin > New! Guest guest
OOOh- a ginger fomentation would be great but you would need help- make strong ginger tea, dip in a cloth, wring and place on tight area- change cloth as it cools(I HAVE done this to myself before!!) These work great for such things. Hope you are feeling better today Another thing you could do is place a tennis ball on the floor and roll onto the point- hold it there until the pain subsides, then roll it around and find another sharp spot...this is good maintenance as well!! Guest guest
I'm not a massage therapist but I know those knots intimately (mine, not yours <g>). Most of the time that I have a horrible nasty knot like that it is because a bone is misaligned somewhere. This makes the muscles start or end in a place they are not acustomed to being. Even a slight misalignment can give you an extremely tight or spasmed muscle. I have found (from much painful personal experience) that if the bone is out there is nothing a massage therapist can do until the bone is put back. Some symptomatic relief, yes, but the knot will still be there. I see a chiropractor but you can also get bones realigned by an osteopath. It's worth getting it checked, especially if the knot does not go away completely after massage. Sure you can sometimes put bones back yourself or instruct others how to do it, but not easily if haven't had it done to you many times and know what it feels like. A lot of times you'll get relief from the severe pain of a bone being out after 2-3 days but, as your muscles will tell you, it's usually because something else went out in compensation, not because the first one got fixed.
