Hi All,

Ok just when I thought I was getting more knowledgeable, I find that I don't know the difference between hydrosols and Essential Oils. Help !!! Can someone explain the difference?

Thanks alot,

Angie

Something to think about.

Suzanne mentions that every litre of hydrosol contains between 0.05 and 0.2

milliliters of essential oil, depending on the water solubility of the

plant's components and the distillation parameters. however, the essential

oils in solution in a hydrosol will, when analyzed, show a chemical profile

different from that of the pure oil from the same run [p.12]. OK, but how

different?

Unfortunately, except for UK grown chamomiles and angelica root, I have not

yet been able t compare chemical profiles of hydrosol and essential oil from

the same run. Still, I cannot resist mentioning my finings from a recent

analysis of Juniper Berry hydrosol.

Checking first pH, which accords much with Suzanne's 'Hacts, at 3.75, I then

reviewed several recent analyses of Juniper Berry(Juniperus communis L.)

essential oil. all indicate a-pinene (>60%) as a major component with other

monoterpene hydrocarbons, which gives the oil its slightly turpentine odour

and relatively low solubility. The main oxygen-containing component is

terpinen-4-ol which, according to my analyses, occurs in comparatively low

amounts(>2.0%)

Varro Tyler [Honest Herbal, p227] mentions that the diuretic action of

juniper results from it's essential oil and, specifically, the constituent

terpinen-4-ol (1.37.% of the oil by weight), which increases the glomerular

filtration rate in the kidneys [J. Janku, M. Hava, and O. Mitl. Experientia

13;255-256. 1957]. Excessive doses of terpinen-4-ol, however, may cause

kidney irritation, and in the case of persons already suffering from kidney

disease, this can result from even normal therapeutic doses.

Juniper and it's preparations must not be used by expectant mothers since

they not only increase movements but also stimulate contraction of the

uterus [P.H. List and l. Horhammer (Eds.) Hagars handbuch der

parmazeutischen Praxis, 4th Edition, Volume 5, 333-337, 1976].

Therefore bearing all this in mind, I was somewhat surprised to discover

that the hydrosol contains 66.37% terpinen-4-ol in the essential oil

portion. In terms of parts per million this is probably pretty mini, but I

shall NOT be ingesting any hydrosols all the same. We need to Know much

more.[KEP's Note: Which is EXACTLY what Martin Watt and other's have been

saying since the book came out. I hope they have recovered from their

bruises they received when making their opinions known!)

END>>>>

Cheers!

I am only at the moment responding to the ONE above statement .....

there is ONE hydrosol that I know, Martin (CC'd on this), you would ingest - Genuine Turkish Rosa damascena! At least I bet you did in food in Turkey ;) Otherwise I do understand what ya mean and I hope others will too :) !

That was Charles@EssentialOils who said that.

I've no problem with Rose Hydrosol and a couple of others... but Like he said, It REALLY needs some more research, especially if one is advocating "theraputic use"

The one BIG thing that was missing from Suzanne's book was the chemical analysis. That's what I went hunting for and disappointed not to find.

Don't get me wrong, I was and am glad to see the book come out, I just think there needs to be a lot more work done before one can suggest to use them internally.

As far as a first book on the subject, it was a good START...let me repeat START, and there's a long way to go, but I'm glad to see that at least people are now talking about hydrosols, instead of ignoring them like so much dirty waste water!

Hi Chris,

and thanks alot. Are they valuable therapeutically or are they more like a FO. I read the other posts but I get lost in some of the jargon that goes on, I like laymans terms.

signed the woman with two kids and ones 13. YIKES make it easy.

Hi Angie,

A Hydrosol is the water that comes directly out of the stills in which the Essential Oil was produced :)

Hi Angie,

Yep, they do have therapeutic effects to them...

NOT a FO at all... which have none, zip... zilch! lol

Take Rose Otto Hydrosol - for a quickie example - in a mist/spritzer

bottle, it's great for your skin...., bath.... with the wonderful

benefits that pure rose otto is known for - I use them (sometimes), but

I still LOVE the pure essentials!!!!!!

Hey, Chris????? ---- The jasmine co-op???? <hint> <hint> <grin> I've

been patient... well, kinda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

Hugs,

Marilyn
