Guest guest
Hi Sose! I thought I saw a mention on flavored oils and making them on one of your posts, but I can't find it anymore! You know how to make them, right? I'd love to make one to add to a lipstick or lip balm, which I'll make when I have my beeswax. Could you tell me how to make it? (flavored oils) I'd really apreciate that! Thanks! Lena

Guest guest
Flavored Oils can be made by any of the home oil making method. The key is to start with fresh, strong, good quality herbs. This means don't pick them with a bunch of dew on them (just after the dew dries is best), and don't wash them roughly!! You will wash the oil off:) Of course if you are going to make it to be eating be sure that everything you put in is edible. I like to make flavored oils to add to my wine. There are also several that you can buy. Make sure they are organic!! That is very important. The other part about most edible oils (especially those you make yourself) is that they spoil pretty quick. So refrigerate them, and use them within a month. I would probably recommend refrigeration for the bought ones too, but ask the person selling them to you, they should be able to tell you more about the specific oil. For flavored oils, Don't use the "dry" extraction methods. Always make them in another oil. I think that is all my warnings:) here's the methods for making oils. Oil: This is a basic oil preparation, used for massage, bruise, cosmetic andmedicinal oils and lip balms, salves and ointments. The choice of oil useddepends upon the final product. If it is going to be for healing, such as asalve or ointment, my preference is a good quality olive oil. If it is to beused for massage or cosmetic purposes, I like almond oil. Use a goodquality, preferably cold pressed vegetable oil.Preserving the oils: Cold press oils can become rancid fairly quickly, depending upon the oil, and should be refrigerated. Another aid inmaintaining freshness is to add 1/4 teaspoon of benzoin tincture to one cupof oil or 500 I.U. of vitamin E to one cup of oil. No-cook methodAll herbs should be ground or chopped finely.Put the herbs in a clear glass jar.Just cover the herbs with good quality vegetable oil (olive, almondsafflower, avocado, etc.) Make sure that the herbs are completely submergedin oil, or mold may occur.Let the jar sit in a warm, sunny place for 10 to 14 days.Filter and press using muslin or some type of filter. Refilter if necessary.Discard herbs. Cooked methodPut herbs and oils into a heavy pot.Heat at a low heat until herbs are crispy. Watch carefully and stir often.Carefully filter and press oil. Crock PotPut herbs and oils into a crock pot.Heat for 2 or 4 hours.Carefully filter and press oil.
