Guest guest
Duh, now I recognize the e-mail addy! LOL! I make my own babyfood too, but I have tons of jars because I had to try the different tastes on AJ before I started making bunches! (Also we travel alot so I buy Earth's best baby food in jars for the trips) Canning jars would work, but the smallest sizes are best (and it's hard to find 1/2 cup jars!) The bigger jars get too hot when you burn the candle. I add oils to my wax and the amount is staggering (oil evaporates easily in the hot wax). I add 1/2t to 1 t per lb of paraffin wax. I also add it right at the end just before I pour the candle. This is why I need to be able to get the oils much cheaper than I currently buy them. I buy unfiltered domestic beeswax. The bleached and imported beeswax tends to have some paraffin wax in it and I like filtering the dead bees out of my wax (just kidding on the bees). I haven't purchased beeswax for a while (need to order soon) but I think $4-7/lb is about right. The cosmetic grade is more expensive and is used for lipbalms etc. As for supplies, I get all of my supplies at the local thrift store. A double boiler is great, but if you have a garage or workshop I'd get a small electric burner (cheap at walmart) and work out there. The wax is #$*#^ on the kitchen, and is very difficult to clean up. I have a very small workshop (used to be a storage room), and I bought a carpet piece (left over, cost $10) so I don't slip on spilled wax, I have a small burner and an old double boiler. You will also want an old ladle, old wooden spoon, an old strainer (if you use natural unfiltered beeswax), some cheesecloth (to filter out any bleckies in your melted wax). After you've read this long novel, e-mail me at mbrantner and I'll copy some simple candle recipes from my candle making books for you and send them snail mail. Smiles! Guest guest
check it out while your surfing over there :-) the main reson i was thinking local beekeeper is so we can avoid the double shipping. like i get a huge chunk and take it home by car and we only have to ship it out to everyone once not get it shipped to me and then ship it to all. did that just make any sense at all?*lol* speaking of floating candles, those are easy to make, right, just the shape of the mold? *smile* chris the_oil_co-op , " Sarah Ihle " <ihle@e...> wrote: > THanks the oodles of infor helps imensly!
