R. Wicke note: One of my own favorite anti-Virulent-Heat remedies -

it

works only if the illness is still in the Wei-stage: put 5 cloves of

garlic and 1 whole lemon, including the peel and seeds in a blender,

and

blend into a creamy liquid, adding enough water to allow blender to

work.

Then drink. This concoction has considerable vitamin C, both from the

lemon and garlic, but also lots of bioflavonoids from the lemon peel,

which enhance the action of vitamin C in stimulating and regulating

the

immune system.

If the illness has gone into the Qi-stage where the Heat has become

Interior, this remedy does not work, which makes sense from a TCM

perspective - it is very dispersing (relieves Exterior) and warm in

nature.

[2] FDA Ephedra ban

 

While we have not hesitated to criticize the FDA in the past, their

recent

ban of ephedra in products labeled as weight-loss or dieting aids was

an event we predicted many years ago. According to traditional

Chinese

guidelines, ephedra (ma huang) is to be used cautiously subject to

the

following conditions:

 

Releases the Exterior and disperses Cold; indicated for TaiYang-

stage

Exterior Chill; acts by inducing sweating.

Circulates Lung Qi; relieves cough and asthma.

Promotes urination and relieves edema accompanying External Evil.

 

Cautions:

Avoid or use cautiously in Deficiency conditions characterized by

excessive sweating.

Can aggravate high blood pressure and cause restlessness and

tremors.

What the preceding means is that people with a weak constitution, or

who

are prone to perspire easily, should not take this herb. Most

Americans

suffer from significant & quot;Deficiency & quot;-type conditions. In

such

cases, the herb should be avoided entirely, or if used, must be

combined

with the correct herbs to buffer its harsh and undesirable actions.

Weight-loss has never been a traditional use of ephedra; on the

contrary,

it is intended for short-term use for acute illness only.

 

The FDA exempted the use of ephedra by herbalists in traditional

applications. The vast majority of ephedra abuse was due to its use

in

dieting and weight-loss products, which often leads to addiction

because

the herb is potentially dangerous when used for extended periods of

time.

 

To protect the availability of ephedra for valid uses, I recommend

that

herbalists be on the lookout for ephedra addicts pretending to buy

it for

an asthma condition. Refuse to sell it to these folks. (By taking a

thorough health history and doing tongue and pulse assessments, you

should

be able to independently assess the appropriateness of ephedra.) You

will

be doing them and all of us a favor by insisting that this useful but

potentially dangerous herb be used responsibly.
