Guest guest
Here are some thoughts on the patient always difficult long distance Plus I will share some of my concerns with our profession : I am not having a go at you Martin please excuse me If I use your example as a means of talking about issues that have been concerning me for quite a few years now. On the one hand we have a woman in her early twenties. She has What on the surface appears to be Kidney stones and not for the 1st time, because she has had one Kidney removed after apparent severe damage. There is a proportion of acupuncturists (and I used to be one of those) who beleive that acupuncture can do any thing. Well, in fact, acupuncture IS the most powerful form of directly affecting the workings of a human being. Why? amongs other things because we can alter the hormonal functions of a body. How fast our nails grow, skin changes, heart rate, lacrimation etc., are all regulated by hormonal function. this is a two way sword. An acupuncture point that can alter function in one human being or (animal !) for the better will, in another create dysfunction. Do this a few times and we have a problem. I am dismayed when I hear from students that they have been told that acupuncture does no harm. That if we get it wrong the body will sort itself out and no big deal. It has been a big deal to a number of patients that have been passed on to me, after having been misdiagnosed and mistreated both by acupunture and C Herbs. I have seen too many acupuncturists (including myself) and lay people, made even more dysfunctional in their health by wrong treatments. In my view, there is far too many wrong treatments. It is also my view, that a great many acupuncturists ,whilst well meaning, are not aware of the power at their command. If my assesment is accurate. Why would this be so? I beleive the answer lies in the fact that we are not taught to be critical of the results of our actions. I don't mean critical as in critiziing. What I refer to is the development of the faculty of questioning the treatments we have done, via the input of changes in our patients, in terms of their physical functions, emotional states and immune response. I also am of the opinion, that we need more common sense, by linking Western information of organ function, hormonal effects and physical structure with CM. If a person has stones in the GBladder or KID T to think in tems of Phlegm may be useful But the person has gone too far in their hormonal chemical imbalance. By this stage What is required is direct intervention of which there are many forms both western and chinese. What acupuncture is capable of though, is 2 things. It can make a person so imbalanced, that they will get stones, either, by generating muscular contraction around the kidney or gallbladder so that the organ becomes dysfunctional and or it can disrupt the hormonal system in such a way that Ph balances, fluid densities are affected etc.,. The opposite is also true. For the stresses people experience in ordinary life can also generate the dysfunctions that will lead to stones. Acupuncture is uniquely placed to release the tension and bring harmonies to the system once the stones have been removed. I belive that there are C Herbs that can dissolve stones but I don't practice Herbs so I am not qualified to comment. We have been offered the example of a young woman with posible Kidney stone I for one would want to know more of her history over the past 10 yrs at least. Like what sort of stresses, diet, drugs, western or eastern intervention has occured prior to the 1st Kidney removal. ie. I would want to know what led to the stones in the fist place. I belive that as a group we lack the power of objective diagnosis. I Beleive that amongs the Acupunctue community there is a large number of higly skilled individuals capable of incredible diagnostic abilities. However, the rest of us poor mortals need objective help. This help exists and is available. I share this beleifs not to put us down, but to raise the issue of the power at our command and the importance of effective diagnosis. I have debated wether to offer this for further discussion. I feel so passionate on this subject that I will take a chance. salvador www.meridian-qi-acupuncture.com
