Qi as a gradient

Ken and All,

You asked me to assume I was describing Qi to a congressman. I need to find a congressman with a degree in biology and/or biochemistry. Here goes.

Congressman Rose, consider Qi like the "slope" of a diffusion gradient. As you know, when there is no concentration gradient and all solutes are homogenous throughout a system, we have chemical equilibrium. This is a system at rest. Living systems experience "death" when the system is at rest or in chemical equilibrium. As we were taught in biochemistry, equilibrium is death and homeostatic balance is life. Homeostasis relies on gradients or slopes. Ions or molecules will move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Positive ions will move toward negative ions and the converse. Pressure gradients cause by a beating heart or by gravity will cause hydrostatic diffusion gradients. Finally osmotic gradients will cause water to flow back from its location after hydrostatic diffusion.

So Congressman Rose, qi is like a diffusion gradient. Homeostasis relies on it. You also recall that homeostasis requires a balanced steady state. You keep feeding it material for input, which gets processed, and then there is an output. As long as the slope is not to steep or not too flat, you will get to have a balanced amount of energy molecules, nutrients or structural materials for your life form. Balance plays a role. Also synchronicity plays a role. You have to feed the system and clean the system to keep the slopes the same and balanced. You have to maintain a constant flow of ingredients through the system. So Congressman, qi is that gradient for which we must maintain balance, synchronicity and an uninhibited flow of incoming nutrients and outgoing wastes plus all internal flows must be maintained.

Congressman, Chinese medicine has studied this homeostasis of balanced, synchronous and fluid gradients for thousands of years. CM has learned many subtleties in maintaining the balance, synchronicity and flow of human homeostatic systems. It's done cheaply with exercise, manipulation and use of nutrient combinations. We at CM-Net feel you would do well in including CM in your national health bill.

If you have any questions Congressman Rose, feel free to contact my fiend Ken ... who will just ask you more questions ... mainly in Chinese. Come to think of it Congressman, try posing your questions to my friends Z'ev, Simcha, Bob and Fernando. They'll work with you in English ... or maybe it's called American dialect now.

Thanks, Congressman, for including CM in your bill.

Respectfully,

Emmanuel Segmen
