Excerpt from Report on Institute of Medicine Committee Meeting

on Use of Complementary & Alternative Medicine December 11,

2003. by Randall Neustaedter, LAc, OMD, CSOMA Director:

 

…only effective ways to learn Integrative Med is to present ONE

MEDICINE (not a belief system), to retain open-minded skepticism,

to make CAM practices part of required curriculum, & to involve

CAM practitioners in interdisciplinary activities.

 

This means CAM practitioners must be present in Med schools to

teach & to give hands on patient care. CAM must be integrated

into every core area including anatomy (acupuncture anatomy),

pathology (models from oriental medicine), & treatment.

 

This needs to happen despite hostility of faculty, inevitable conflict

with an EBM approach to teaching, & time constraints.

 

Dehumanising eager & idealistic Med students in their training

programs was discussed at length. Conclusion was that Med

students required exposure to CAM in clinical practice for benefit of

their own healing & mental/spiritual health. A director of Med Edu

at Georgetown University & Dean of Med Edu at Mt Sinai medical

school said this.

I think it is a great dream, to take the 50 or so years and have all medical fields interact and educate each other as best to solve and especially prevent illness. It would be better than mandating crisis-only care. < wrote:
