hello ken,

 

i am interested in this translation of the dao de ching you mention

and the authours reference to wittgenstein. i am presently writing a

paper on the contemporary practice of acupuncture (and in para thesis

tcm) from weekender gp through to lineaged master and the styles of

emergence between that are in play in the western field. what

diversity. the plurality of understanding its practices seems to

transcend the polarity of modernity and postmodernity, from

reductionary through vital with degrees in depth of reference to the

traditional, that are again multiple. an emergence of the many into a

contemporary hybrid is being expected to give such practices a

defineable name in the medical western orthodox field. the nih calls

for the elucidation of a neurobiological mechanism for acupuncture

and other complementary arts(sic)by 2020, they go on to declare that

their intension is to remove the source of intelectual and

philosophical tension that insinuates itself between and among

practitioners of the healing arts. what lack of vision, or are we

talking a new integral vision, and language to embrace the natural

diversity of practice/s. can we continue to play the two games

together ?

Greetings. What diversity indeed, and thank God. I too think it' a little amusing and maybe a little ironic that so much effort is expended on definitively defining the source of 'intellectual and philosophical tension' in the many schools and lineages. Especially ironic when one of the tenets is, 'That which can be spoken, is not the experience of Tao'.

(I am in no way suggesting acupuncture was or is strictly Taoist, but that there is a great many like lineages of experiential guidelines -meaning teachers- that sought students of a -uh- of certain qualities. But we have to dance around it. You had to be of a kind of mind for learning it. It seems there's many like that today.

I think the subjective feelings that one has when performing acupuncture cannot exactly be taught either. Some focus here or there or have too much fear or too little humility, etc. Location, depth, etc., can be taught, but there is a lot said about things there is no way of talking about. Sometimes the relationship of lineage allows it to transfer naturally.

I bet you anything, when "THE MECHANISM OF ACUPUNCTURE IS UNDERSTOOD",

not much will have changed, the science and the styles are going different ways. Especially as we more and more view ourselves and others in a postmodern, cookie cutter way. This is this, and that is that, instead of all partaking from the flow.
