Guest guest
Can one treat a disharmony by a set of traditionally listed acu points, and avoid the root flaw seen in the design, the picture, of the illness? Suppose the 8 parameters and the asking and so on has established that a particular acute-on-chronic headache on R temple, with radiation to vertex, accompanying nausea and visual problems prior to the attack, is a Migraine. One applies a set of traditional points which include the SJ 5-GB 41 pair and the local Tai Yang-Yang-Ming extra points, with GB 1, and LV 3 to destagnate, and LV-GB shu and mu points to stabilize. Or one adds other effective points one has learned, or has developed in practice. The case responds, and the matter seems taken care of. The patient reports during follow-up that there has been no attack since. But if one did not treat the root cause, and has managed to make the tell-tale symptomology which marks this, disappear, what has one actually accomplished? Suppose the Migraine was really a GB Excess, which was caused by a Metal condition, say LU yin Deficient, Dryness Aggravated? In which case the GB Migraine was a signal that there is a flux and an ebb in the LU-LI of Metal, and that this was also causing a Mother not nourishin Son for Water, and the person was turning 40, and problems on knees, bones, feet, ears were showing up. And that another truly dangerous development was brewing inside the Colon, which was tending to Heat, occasional Fire; as latent, low grade bleeding per rectum, internal polyps? And if untreated this could lead to dire problems? Please bear with me, and don't take this as a criticism of any system, or school of thought, nor a proposal to set up one manner of healing as superior to the other. Look at the mechanism of dynamics, and the net effect caused: [a] If one dealt with the migraine with LV based points, " reduced " a GB Excess, one must have also caused it to leave the Son, HT, impoverished, which in turn could not control the basic Excess in LI, because the LU yin was Deficient. Net result: one ended up by aggravating an already Excess condition in a closed fu organ, LI, notorious for registring Heat, Dryness and Fire. . If one dealth with the migraine with LV based points, " reduced " a GB Excess, and when the crisis was over, then toned " Wood " in order to cause harmony, one would also tone the Son, HT, which in turn would, possibly, overly control the basic LU yin Deficient. Net result: one would end up by again aggravating an already Excess condition in a closed fu organ, LI, notorious for registring Heat, Dryness and Fire. Now one might say that all this is somewhat simplistic and that such a flux and ebb between yin and yang and elements somewhat far fetched and academic. I would agree, but would still wonder what will happen to the Metal problem, which caused all this? Should one then, as healers in a newly established old art, treat the presenting layer of illness by a set of points and heal it, which is to say make it disappear? Or should one treat an emergent pain condition, but more by treating the root and the stem? Even in a chronic Migraine, first settling the 8 extraord channel imbalance, and then correcting the assymmetry, and then treating the LU-LI imbalance, would render quick relief from pain. This way one has taken care of Wood pain and Metal Deficiency. To the question then, should it be Points? Or the Picture? Dr. Holmes Keikobad MB BS DPH Ret.
