Guest guest
I read in a book recently that the author placed the Liver in the lower burner (jiao) In my education and in other books I read, I learned that Liver/GB belongs to the middle burner (jiao) along with Spleen/Stomach, responsible for digestion, so this surprised me as the author is well educated. Are there more " truths " out there? I guess all agree on that Heart and Lungs resides in Upper Jiao, responsible for cirkulationa of Xue and Qi, and that Kidney/UB is places in Lower Jiao, responsible for reproduction and excretion. But I would love to hear your opinions on Livers relation to the San Jiao. If anyone places Liver in Lower Jiao, what does this mean clinically? Intestines...? Where do they belong? Or do they? (I may use the words " reside " and " belong to " in a sloppy way. please excuse my insufficient english in that case) Best regards Holger Wendt
Guest guest
Hi Holger, You may find this relation to the liver location in many other books of many other ancient texts as well. The reason for that, is that Ch.M. is less interested in anatomical location of organs, rather their physiological/energetical functioning. If you consider the anatomical location of the Liv/Gb - you are right. Yet, in terms of physiology, the liver is very much associated with the lower burner and the kidneys. Liver blood and K. Jing are interdependent, thus blood storage in the liver relates also to K. functioning. Moreover, in the Shang Han Lun (the famous treatise on febrile diseases), liver and kidney form the lower Jiao for the diagnosis procedure of the advancement of febrile disease into the body. It is mainly after the Shang Han Lun (and the formation of the Febrile Disease school of thought) that debate concerning the physiological location of the liver has arisen in China. Hope this clarifies the matter. There are many inconsistant definitions in CM. Many of them are inconsistant with each other or contradictory; some even have no clinical basis. Guest guest
I'm a new student of TCM so my experience is limited. In the introductory class I've taken my professor stated that sometimes the L. is listed in the middle jiao and sometimes it is listed in the lower jiao. It seems that TCM is more concerned with function and relationships between the various organs than the actual, physical location. Hope it helps, Tim Northwood Chinese Medicine , Holger Wendt <holger.wendt@t...> wrote: > I read in a book recently that the author placed the Liver in the lower > burner (jiao) > > In my education and in other books I read, I learned that Liver/GB belongs > to the middle burner (jiao) along with Spleen/Stomach, responsible for > digestion, so this surprised me as the author is well educated. Guest guest
dear Holger, As I am CM doctor, i do not like to transfer Chinese Xin Gan Pi Fei Sheng as Heart, Liver,Spleen, Lung and Kidney. However, for outside of China, people do have problem to understand CM. It might be good way to set up an international way to use Chinese medicine translation. Since CM is more interesting on the multi- rather than single,we can use Hearts, Livers , Spleens, Lungs and Kidneis to explain CM.
